The Russian Futurists

Last week I was fortunate enough to be driving around the Tuscan countryside with some good friends (including our aforementioned legal counsel), listening to Scott’s iPod via iTrip whenever the crowded radio dial allowed. The Russian Futurists’ “Still Life” burst through the static with a playground-simple blend of orchestral washes, a loping drum pattern, and intimate lyrics. Upon returning home to my broadband connection, I did some Googling to find that Matthew Hart (the man behind The Russian Futurists) has been turning out such triumphant heartbreak jams since 2001, and I am certainly not the first to notice. His latest, The Thickness, though, shows enough polish to position The Russian Futurists as a less sterile and equally infectious Postal Service. Mr. Hart is currently touring with Caribou and Junior Boys (June 9 at The Magic Stick, Detroit!), catch him if you can.

  1. Thanks for posting these. I'm so in love with the Russian Futurists right now. There's a great article/interview that I read where Hart describes getting drunk and listening to AM radio to get inspired, and having his friends come in and find him weepy-eyed with an empty wine bottle, listening to "Buttons and Bows" — Isn't that a great image?

  2. just tested all of the downloads and they seem to be working fine. keep in mind, we don't host these mp3s ourselves; we point to mp3s hosted by the label or artist, that way we never have to take the blame when they function erratically 😉

  3. if you were planning on catching russian futurists at the magic stick this thursday w/ caribou & junior boys, you may want to head over to pitchfork to read their little news bit on the rf's trouble w/ border patrol…

  4. thanks for the pointer. still would've been a good show but not quite the same without that loathesome threat to security, the Russian Futurists…

  5. His newest album is actually "Our Thickness." – Just to anyone who is trying to google it.
The Russian Futurists rock. Matthew Adam Hart makes some of the most touching music out there currently, and he does it all with what sounds like a casio keyboard and some friends to back him up on the vocals. It's been a while since I have really cared to much about lyrics, but he makes me care. I suggest reading the lyrics on his website.
