Let me get a couple biases out of the way real quick.

1. Emo is one of the dumbest/laziest subgenres of them all. Every damn band in existence could be classified as emo, including “cry in your beer” country garbage.

2. Rex (guitarist extraordinaire) is a friend of mine, so I will not say anything nice about his amazing technique nor point you to the intro of “shoot” (below) for a taste of his brilliance.

Melancholy Club is a four-piece band out of Salt Lake City and Provo, Utah. They surprise-released their latest album, thank god for you, the other night, hoping to get as many ears as possible on it before their set at SLC’s indie-rock-palooza known as Kilby Block Party. Their set is Friday at 11:45am on the Desert Stage, by the way. Don’t miss them!

As I listened to the album on my way home from work, it brought back memories of my first exposure to Cursive and my discovery of Jade Tree Records in the late 90s. The noodley, two-hand tapping guitar work; jazzy drumming; and vocalist Tanner’s falsetto building into ferocious screams—thank god for you—would fit nicely in the Jade Tree lineup of yesteryear, next to bands like Challenger, Cap’n Jazz, The Promise Ring, and onelinedrawing to name a few. Check out the killer drum intro with the sneaky double-kick on “galaxy” and the burner “my own problem” below for a taste.

GAYTHEIST

GAYTHEIST, the renowned Portland-based trio, has made a powerful comeback with their latest album, The Mustache Stays. This marks their first release since 2020’s How Long Have I Been On Fire? and features 10 new hard-hitting tracks, plus an insane cover that packs an equally forceful punch.

From the opening track “Shelved” to the closing “Brave The Swarm,” the trio delivers 32 minutes of relentless, heavy post-hardcore, mingled with some sludge and stoner punk. This album demands to be played on repeat and I highly, highly recommend it.

Blab School is a rad new band out of North Carolina. The band consists of Ryan Seagrist (Discount, The Kitchen), Elizabeth Killian (Teens In Trouble, Glowing Stars), Dave Cantwell (Analogue, Cold Sides, In the Year of the Pig), and Fikri Yucel (Veronique Diabolique). I found out about these guys when I read “FOR FANS OF: Bad Religion, Buzzcocks, Descendants, Drive Like Jehu, The Faction, The Fucking Champs, Gang of Four, Green Day, The Hives, Hot Snakes, Jawbox, The Jesus Lizard, Les Savy Fav, Lightning Bolt, Meatbodies, Melt-Banana, Metz, Osees, Pipe, Pissed Jeans, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Superchunk, The Thermals” on Fort Lowell’s Instagram page, teasing their debut album. I was able to get my ears on a sneak peek from my friends at Fort Lowell, and I have been hooked ever since.

We are beyond stoked to bring you the premiere of the first single, “Scrolls”, from their incredible debut, self-titled album. “Scrolls” exceeded all my expectations from the list of “for fans of” above. It is a burner from the get-go with punishing drums, chunky bass lines, and razor-sharp guitars, sounding like Pretty Girls Make Graves meets Superchunk!

Los Angeles duo Double Life are channeling all the goods from 90’s post-hardcore, including powerful, groove-heavy drums, spacey vocals, chunky bass lines, and fuzzed-out guitar. Their first single and title track, “Indifferent Stars” (below), reminds me of bands like Jawbox and Failure with a bit of “Seven”-era Sunny Day Real Estate-like ferocity.

Double Life’s self-released, 3-song debut EP, Indifferent Stars is, out on January 24. It will leave you wanting for more. Here’s to hoping for more! Enjoy.

Flooding is a three-piece band out of Kansas City, Missouri. They are releasing their new album, Silhouette Machine, today (09/29/2023).

Listening to Silhouette Machine is like watching a horror movie, even more so after the initial shock and surprise of album opener “Run”. We know the person running from evil on the big screen is headed for their ultimate demise, and we anticipate the shock of it happening even though we know it’s going to happen, and it’s still thrilling and works every time—it’s a tried and true formula. Silhouette Machine works just like that. Most of the songs have a soothing, almost ethereal beginning, and you know what’s coming. Then they strike and pummel your senses with a brutal onslaught of heavy guitars, drums, and Rose’s incredible shredded vocals. It works every time. I love it.

Check out “Run”, “Muzzle”, and “Transept Exit” below for a little example. As I was told regarding this album “don’t sleep”. Go get it. Silhouette Machine is out on vinyl via The Ghost Is Clear, on cassette via Manor, and digitally via Flooding. Enjoy.
