Phantogram
Label: BarsukGenre: Electronic, Pop
Phantogram sets the bar high for new music in 2010. Obvious comparisons to Portishead aside, this young duo easily hold their own. It's a fine distinction, but Phantogram is more space-hop than trip-hop and "When I'm Small" throws down a groove of heavily plucked bass that brightens up the bedroom vocals and scratchy record sample circling its way through the track. About a third of the way through everything drops out except soft synth pulses and echoing guitar to highlight Sarah Barthel's voice. Diamonds spill from this woman's mouth every time she opens it! My limited judgment is based on this and a couple other tracks, but I'm happily prejudiced and waiting to be fully abducted by Eyelid Movies on February 9th (vinyl via Ghostly). East Coast dates begin shortly before.

We just included Pocket's Top 9 of 2009 in our on-going Best of 2009 lists from friends of the 'hive. Be sure to take a gander that way for his take on art, apps and laughs along with his cover of New Order's "Sub-Culture" for next year's tribute album from 24 Hour Service Station. If you don't already have any of Richard Jankovich's songs in your pocket, now's the time to start squirreling. Formerly of Burnside Project, Jankovich began remixing tracks for oh, folks like Beck, Radiohead, Cat Power and Antony & The Johnsons. And now he's putting his depth of musical taste and history to good use in a series of singles marrying vocalists from bands like Dag Nasty, The Church, Shudder to Think, Liquid Liquid and Asobi Seksu with his own blend of electronic beats, blips, and blasts. I noticed he dropped a Human League sampled beat in one of his tracks as well—it's like he's curating the Gen X museum of music geekdom with his Warhol-esque pastiches of the past and ever evolving present.

Total Babe
Label: SO tmGenre: Folk, Pop
Compared to the bands I'm about to use to describe them, Total Babe could be named Just Babes. Still in their teens, this Minnesota quartet just performed their EP release party in their hometown and one of their mother's baked brownies for the event. But their songwriting skills belie their ages. Oh the hooks! I was just listening to The Wishing Chair by 10,000 Maniacs and there's a similarity in the two bands' vocal deliveries, the languid enunciation, the stringing together of syllables from adjacent words, the way the vocals sound as if they're sung in some other Germanic language. Or imagine Lush unplugging and dropping their tempo a notch. That's it sort of— Total Babe strips away the feedback, the distortion, and the droning from the shoegaze aesthetic, leaving room for their heavenly vocals to breathe. Surprisingly, mature musical decisions for a young, fresh band.

Atlas Sound
Label: KrankyGenre: Experimental, Pop
What does it take to to wake me from a 3hive coma? One simple tweet: "@diplo: i wish atlas sound would ask me to make them a mixtape." Which got me thinking, How friggin sweet would that be? Which got me thinking, Wait, none of us have posted Atlas Sound on 3hive?? Which got me thinking, Where's my login??? So here goes...
Atlas Sound is what the crazy prolific Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox calls himself when doing the home recording thing. It's hard to put a finger on his steez cause it morphs based on his mood and whatever's moving him at the time. To get a sense of his wide range of influences, just check the playlist to his latest "micromix". The common thread is a drowsy, droney, and often messy sheen to surprisingly tuneful and hypnotic song structures.
"Doctor" covers an obscure single from '50s/'60s doo-wop act The Five Discs. "Walkabout" is a pop chant that'll shimmy its way into your head and stay a while. And, given the season, I threw in Bradford's oddly sentimental "holiday" tune from 2007. Now, I'm heading back to Twitter for more inspiration...

Netherfriends
Label: Emergency UmbrellaGenre: Pop
After a few days of obsessing over categorizing Netherfriends’ sound, I realized such efforts were unnecessary and that the six tracks on this EP were strong enough to stand alone. As vain as my attempts at classification may have been, I still have to try. Here goes: the majority of the Netherfriends EP is an exploration of pop possibilities. It’s an addictive mix of Animal Collective’s meandering instrumentation and the Elephant Six Collective’s tendencies to pay homage to ‘60s era pop. "Mom Cop" leans towards the latter. However you decide to categorize them, listener beware: I ended up memorizing the lyrics to all six songs in a day. Netherfriends exposed the addictive side of my personality.

Patrick & Eugene
Label: Tummy TouchGenre: Jazz, Pop
Don't hit the download link unless you adore:
1. Ukeleles
2. Banjos
3. Bongos
4. Slide whistles
5. Bells
6. Super cheery pop music
7. Trombones, clarinets and a variety of horns
Because those are the tools that Patrick & Eugene use to transform Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out of My Head" into a bouncy klezmer romp. When left to their own songwriting devices P&E create equally breezy tracks, varied in tempo, but not tone. These are happy songs. Sunshine songs. Glass half full songs. Dixieland jazz songs. If you're old and jaded, grumpy, too cool to smile, or maybe just mean you'll want to hit someone after hearing the twin songs "Altogether Now" and "The Birds and the Bees," but maybe, just maybe if you listen long enough you'll offer a hand to the poor soul you just floored with your fist. Post Patrick & Eugene as the marching band to next month's Afghanistan surge and Obama very well may start bringing troops home in 18 months. They've got that kind of feel-good power.

Neon Indian
Label: LefseGenre: Pop
Does time seem to move too slow for you? Do your days and weeks drag on? If you're interested in making time move faster I've got a piece of advice for you: make some babies. Probably not the best solution for everyone, but let me tell you the last thirteen years of my life have skated by. Yesterday I worried whether or not my kid would keep breathing throughout the night; today I worry whether or not he'll be able to find and hold down a job. It's not the economy that makes me anxious, but the teenagers I'm surrounded with everyday and their work ethic or lack thereof. So lately I've been on the lookout for tips on teaching kids how to work and why they should care about the quality of their work. Let me share what I learned today: don't introduce your child to Neon Indian!
One quick glance at these track names and I think you know where I'm going and what Neon Indian, né Alan Palomo, is selling. These playful, lilting pop songs and their psychedelic synth flourishes will do nothing but encourage your youngsters to raid your medicine cabinet, string up a hammock out back and sway their days away. He uses subversively cheerful melodies and samples of bird songs to lead your children away on a breezy headphone trip, far away from their duties and responsibilities. I'd like to see you get your children to make their beds to this music, let alone pull a shift at Mickey D's! If I didn't know any better, I'd say he's perfected the aural aura Cornelius has taunted us with for years. Whatever you do, don't listen to this! And be sure to keep your iPod and prescriptions locked up tight.

The Cinematics
Label: OrchardGenre: Pop, Rock
Imagine the Smiths on Ritalin. The Cinematics play peppy angst-filled post-punk pop—especially on "New Mexico." They slow it down and gloom it out on "Love & Terror," building the track around the guitar riff of "Personal Jesus." The Glasgow band seem happy to reside sonically in that peculiar time period between the '80s and '90s. This fits my theory that many sounds of popular music tend to rotate on a twenty year cycle. It matters less when the music emerges; the quality of sound and song reign supreme and regardless of their influences, The Cinematics seem to be settling into their own space on this sophomore release.

UltraChorus
Label: SO tmGenre: Beats, Electronic, Pop
The title of this first UltraChorus track reminds me of my five-year-old. He started talking later than most children do and he often uses his own syntax and vocabulary (he named his stuffed puppy LLPP, pronounced "lil-lip"). When he gets tired of listening to me, or anyone for that matter, he'll shake his hands and say, "Too many words, Dad." We've quickly adapted, for better or for worse, his version of English and whenever we're bored of anyone's verbal tirades, anytime their words keep talking and we've stopped listening, we shake our hands and repeat our kid's mantra. Their single artwork offers a keen graphic representation of this "too many words" phenomenon.
Musically, I can't get enough of UltraChorus. These boys from Minneapolis have got pep! Chris from the band used to be in Sukpatch, and his latest project is an extension of the bedroom beats he cranked out for Grand Royal way back in the '90s. Add the words "bubblegum disco" to the mix and you've got an idea of the party this duo dishes out.

The Depreciation Guild
Label: KanineGenre: Pop, Rock
Favorite new song alert! As soon as I heard their new single, "Dream About Me," I rushed to alert my friend Chet who's a big fan of Ocean Blue and Prefab Sprout and while he hasn't reported back yet, I expect to hear that The Depreciation Guild is right up his alley. The band's sound transports me back to the early nineties, the years Chet and I were in radio together. The band takes the lush, dreamy pop sounds of early 4ad bands and distresses them a bit with fuzzy electronics and gentle reverb. Lots of other folks are taking note as well—they've sold out of their new single and Kanine records just reissued their 2007 album. Speaking of friends who'd like this band, I'm surprised our own Clay Calloway didn't beat me to the punch on this one, especially considering two-thirds of the band also play in The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, one of Clay's recent crushes he's gushed about on this site. The moonlighters will be extra busy as both bands head over to play the UK later this month. The band has some Midwest and East Coast dates before then, so if you like what you hear do some homework and catch them live, geography permitting.

Lord Newborn & The Magic Skulls
Label: UbiquityGenre: Experimental, Other, Pop
Well if this ain't the musical equivalent of the Three Amigos. Three musical desperados gathered on the West Coast to create aural havoc and obviously had the time of their lives. The parties involved include: Money Mark, Tommy Guerrero, and Shawn Lee, three "sound scientists" who've all made their own marks flying below the mainstream radar, carving out a groove amidst all that is going to be cool tomorrow. Both Mark and Guerrero released music early on through Mo' Wax and Shawn Lee recorded for Talking Loud and Wall of Sound early in his career. "Dirty Loco" is one of the two songs that serve as the dark heart of the record. The comparison is a bit ludicrous, but it sounds like a track off The Cure's "Pornography" record if Robert Smith had grown up in Southern California, raised on funk and soul. The rest of the album is full of laid back, easy-listening funk tracks, improvised, trippy, and generally cheerful. Dare I say it, Lord Newborn is a rare-groove jam band that I'd be happy spending a summer or three trucking around the country following their wake.

The Radio Dept.
Label: LabradorGenre: Pop
The Radio Dept started a journey a number of years ago, a pop voyage (pronounced French-style) if you will, that has started a new leg. The fuzzed out bliss pop seems so very long ago, as they enter an orchestral funk pop phase, still framed with their signature techniques. Regardless of the destination, the fun is in getting there.
Second Post 5/9/2008: The Radio Dept's last LP Pet Grief further cemented their delicate pop sounds, built with the tools of 80's pop (haunting keyboads, drum machines, echo pedals), as their sound. "Freddie and the Trojan Horse," from their upcoming June EP, doesn't mess with their formula, but it does turn up the tempo and the urgency.
Original Post 11/17/2004: Like religious conversion or political persuasion, music can be very personal. Isn't that why we like it? So rather than a cold, third-person blip about The Radio Dept., allow me to share something personal, which is that I just love The Radio Dept. Love. My longstanding record for the most times I've listened to a song in a row is Joe Jackson's "Got the Time," clocking in at 48 consecutive listens. But, at the rate I'm going, The Radio Dept.'s "Pulling Our Weight" is going to overtake that before the night is over.

Have at 'em. That's the reason why you're here ain't it? This year marks the fifth time the good people of Portland have put their collective musicheads together for a weekend of free live music. The fantastic thing about the aforementioned people of Portland is that they're doing this all out of the goodness of their hearts. Bands, businesses, and residents all volunteer their time to put on this grassroots festival which has spawned action packed compilations that help raise money and awareness for the festival. I wouldn't mind it a bit if I were actually there this weekend enjoying the music, the weather, the wonderful city, and of course a healthy Powell's browse would top things off nicely. If only... Liechtenstein
Label: SlumberlandGenre: Pop
This track has become a staple on the ol' show lately, and I was about to mention how well they sound after The Raveonettes. Good thing I did a bit of fact checking, because in fact the only bands that have preceded them are Ratatat, Sonic Youth, and CSS. Being from Sweden, Liechtenstein probably don't want to be compared to those aforementioned Danes, but I didn't make that comparison. Liechtenstein play sugar-free, bubblegum bedroom pop: not too sweet, but instantly endearing. No nonsense. No frills. Just charming vocal harmonies and a steady beat, all sounding like it's coming from the garage of the girl next door.

Black Moth Super Rainbow
Label: GravefaceGenre: Experimental, Pop
Somewhere in Pennsylvania, some guy makes trippy records with some of his friends. I do have a few more details about this guy. They won't do you much good though. His name is Tobacco and he lives in or around Pittsburgh. Maybe. He sings through a vocoder, a lot. Guys like this would get my vote for American Idol: write sunshiney melodies, set them to gentle grooves, and then perform from a sitting position, practically out of sight, hoodie or knit cap pulled tight, tinkering with their gadgets like some musical alchemist—the music transforming my mood, my state of mind, putting it at ease.
The new album is produced by Dave Fridmann who's worked with The Flaming Lips and Sparklehorse—a couple bands that BMSR would segue beautifully with. If you're a fan of Air, you'll really dig their new single, "Twin of Me." The Go! Team takes the track and runs with it, adding their signature upbeat beat to the otherwise summerly languid song. Speaking of summer, catch the band on the second leg of their summer tour this week on the East Coast.

I am having a hard time filling in the genre field on iTunes for this Luke Top guy. In a word—curious. He plays the field a bit with bands, touring and recording with Cass Mccombs, Papercuts, and Foreign Born. I'm not going attempt a review of the Afro-Hebrew dance band Fool's Gold he co-founded. Discover that on your own. The important part of the story? He's quirky good. The cute-and-personable-brainiac-kid-in-math-class quirky good. Clearly being born in Tel Aviv to an Iraqi refugee and a Russian-born aviator transplanted to Southern California is a successful formula to inspire writing a light sigh of music.

The Raveonettes
Label: ViceGenre: Pop, Rock
I don't think I've been this excited about demos before. The Raveonettes last album Lust Lust Lust engendered exactly that in my aural cavity. Their fuzzy washes of surf guitars and garage rock immediately balmed the ever-present ringing in my ears and Sharin and Sune still lull me to sleep at night with their addictively sweet melodies. They're so good that I don't mind when I awake in the morning wrapped in headphone chord. Dangerous? Yep. Worth it? You bet. The tentatively titled "Last Dance" perfectly captures my fascination with these Danes: from the opening line (which I wish I'd written), "Your lipstick smeared sad," to the Beach Boys-ish woo-woos in the background, to the theme of the song itself (Sune succinctly explains it: "how drug addiction interferes with love"). My addiction to The Raveonettes hasn't interfered with my love life, rather with Alisa's sleep patterns, specifically when the wall of guitars rush in between verses of their track "Hallucinations" and bleed from my ears. It hurts oh so good.

Guilty pleasure confession time. Culture Club. It was Chuck Davis in my Sophomore health class who told me that that one girl was actually a boy. Chuck knew these kinds of things. Chuck could draw the Adam and the Ants logo better than I ever could, so I trusted him, his judgment. So when he told me Boy George could sing I believed him. And he was right. While I rarely listen to Culture Club anymore and the thrill of freaking out my parents by listening to a band with a flamboyant homosexual singer has likewise faded, Boy George's voice hasn't. His soulfulness remains timeless. Props to these Danes for dragging him out of the tabloids and into this chilled out Morricone-esque duet.

Here's another post from my friend Tim Ortopan:
Listening to 21 Tandem Repeats is a bit of a schizophrenic experience. Each track has its own sound and feel, from the Yo La Tengo flavored "Heidi Stopover" to the female vocals on "Pebbles". They have some tracks that sound like The Mountain Goats and others that recall Simon and Garfunkel's harmonies. Make sure you check out "On Frozen Pond," a nice tribute to growing up in Canada. Their album No Junk Mail Please has something for everyone, and they can really pull off the changes in tone well. Perhaps the more I think about it the thing which unites all of the tracks is not schizophrenia but rather that they are all crazy good.

A few months ago (or more, I forget exactly), Paper Moon released an EP that made me pretty excited about the release of Only During Thunderstorms, the band's third full-length release. Well, that release happened two days ago, and that smooth '80s-ish Paper Moon pop is still there, with hooks and catches and everything you'd ever want in bountiful abundance. You gotta check out the opening keyboard lick on Paper Moon's "Mercury is Clearly Opposing Neptune." It fits right in with the popped collars all the high school kids are wearing these days — 1986? '87? Even the little hitch in Allison Shevernoha's voice about 30 seconds into the song reminds me of the old days. If you teenagers of the Reagan years seek a few minutes of nostalgia, or you modern reenactors are wondering what things sounded like back then, look no further than the catchy pop of Winnipeg's Paper Moon.

Here's a post from my friend Tim Ortopan:
I am not cool and as I write this I realize that it is pretty likely that I have never been cool, but I think I know what it looks like and I know this fact: Matt Rickle is cool. I first met him in the summer of 1998 when we both worked at the same movie theater; he was an usher and I worked behind the concession stand. We talked about music and he once even made me a mix cd; that was it for me — total man crush. Over the years I have seen Matt play drums in a variety of bands, some good, some not as good, but the coolest one was certainly the Javelins, for whom he also sings. They have a low fi talk-sing quality mixed with some pretty traditional indie rock instrumentation. The band might not be great but they're pretty good and I'll be damned if they aren't cool.

Label: SharkAttack!Genre: Pop, Rock
One of Charlene's principal players also had his fingers in a sweet little pie called Sugar Free Records back in the '90s. I credit that label for bringing Beulah to my consciousness, and for that I'll be a long time grateful. So I had high hopes for this record when it showed up in the mail and I'm pleased to report I'm not disappointed. Their new single is simply thrilling: wailing, shimmering, jangling guitars create a warm wall of sound; vocals, unrushed, take their time sauntering in and out of the airy melody and just as I settle in, wishing the song never ends, it ends. Repeat! Repeat! Repeat! And that's just the first song. I'm always geeked to file another band between my Galaxie 500, Rain Parade, and Slowdive collections. For those of you in and around Boston, keep your eyes peeled since you'll probably have the first chance at catching them live. No sign of upcoming shows yet. If Charlene were a tree and it fell in the woods, yes, it would make a sound. A big, beautiful, noisy sound.

O+S
Label: Saddle CreekGenre: Pop
There's a pretty cool explanation of how O+S came to be over at the Saddle Creek website. The short version: Orenda Fink and Scalpelist (Cedric LeMoyne of Remy Zero) used an old friendship and lots of new and exotic sounds to put together an album rich in texture and atmosphere. Even on the first spin these tracks seem to possess a complex, almost academic structure. Just the opening 30 seconds of "We Do What We Want To" can clue the listener in to the agenda of O+S, with their swirls of sound and ethereal vocals; that is, to put a little artistry into their art.

Wavves
Label: Fat PossumGenre: Pop, Rock
Young Nathan Williams aka Wavves has been making a lot of...wait for it...no, I'm not going to do that to you...Williams has been making lots of friends (or enemies perhaps) over the weekend as out in Austin, Texas for SXSW as he just wrapped up ELEVEN appearances. He now makes his way out East and then back home to San Diego. Williams' not-so-stealth appearance into the indie scene largely depends on his DIY ethic, both in production and publicity. He's a one man bedroom band equipped with a multi-track recorder and enough instruments, harmonies and fuzz to fill said bedroom. I mentioned fuzz right? He's full of it, but for those of you not trained to do so, be patient and listen deeper into the songs, past the noise, and you'll be rewarded with this kid's hooks! He's full of them too. Plans are in the works to put out a proper studio album, but you'll want to be able to tell your kids you were listening to Wavves "before he sold out." It'll be analogous to the "I was listening to Beck when he was on Bongload" conversations happening 17 years ago. Fat Possum just put out his album, Wavves, last week, but it was live on iTunes months before that. And previously Williams released a slew of cassettes and 7-inch singles on a handful of different labels. Wavves is stirring up a big tsunami in a little pond, jump on board and ride it in before the line-up gets overcrowded.

Coltrane Motion
Label: DatawaslostGenre: Beats, Electronic, Pop, Punk
There's something about 3hive's hard drives and Coltrane Motion. Sam's crashed three years ago shortly before posting about Chicago's Coltrane Motion, and mine recently had to be replaced, too, shortly before posting about them. I had intended to also post some photos I took of Coltrane Motion when I saw them in May 2006 while in Chigaco, but I may have to blame a different hard drive crash from last summer for misplacing most of those. Which is rather unfortunate, as they played in an old church, and I got a sweet shot of Michael Bond bouncing under an enormous lighted cross while still trying to keep his mouth at microphone level and not tipping over his laptop stand. Michael, the driving force behind Coltrane Motion, is also a dead-ringer for 3hive's Sam, but alas, that photographic evidence is also missing. I did find an poor quality shot I took with my phone inside the church, which is below. Sam's description of Coltrane Motion still holds true, as further demonstrated by their first 7" release "The Year Without A Summer b/w Maya Blue," out tomorrow.

Original Post by Sam on 14 Jan 2006:
My hard drive crashed this week which, as reliant as I am on my PowerBook, is like suffering short-term memory loss. One of the few artists I remember having on tap for 3hive is Coltrane Motion, who are members of a Midwest artist-run collective/label called, irony of ironies, datawaslost. These tracks are a good representation of Coltrane Motion's "sound" — in quotes because they seem to have as many "sounds" as they have songs, due in part to their habit of making their own software and instruments. This makes remembering what I wanted to say about Coltrane Motion even more difficult. Was I pogoing to the urgent dance-punk of "I Guess the Kids Are OK" or singing along to the sizzling crooner pop of "Pi Is Exactly Three"? Cutting rug to the cheeky Beck send-up "Supersexy '67" or stroking my chin to the backmasked glitch 'n' beats of "The End of Every Movie"? Couldn't tell ya. So I guess I'll own up to liking all four. And, please, before you start downloading: a moment of silence for my hard drive...

Rae Spoon
Label: NoneGenre: Country, Folk, Pop
Rae Spoon is, according to the publicists, "one of the world’s only transgender country singers." He's also a clever songwriter and a bit of a wit, and really not all that country, at least on his most recent release, superioryouareinferior. This disc is a trip through musical styles, from lo-fi indie pop to mod folk. Drop a buck and download "If You Lose Your Horses" if you're looking for a classic country track, or check out the album's opener for an example of Spoon's songwriting smarts — I never knew I wanted to write a song for the Great Lakes until I heard his. Oh, and if you're looking for a record full of what it means to be a transgender country singer, you might want to keep on looking, because this isn't it.

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone
Label: TomlabGenre: Electronic, Pop
Here's one that's long overdue for an update and what do you know we're just in time for Casiotone's single collection due out this week. It's called Advance Base Battery Life. The opening track, "Old Panda Days," is classic CFTPA and highlights Owen Ashworth's cunning command of couplets rhyming "boyfriends I shouldn't have kept" with "stupid flatbeds we never swept." You'll have to listen to get the context. Not one to leave us hanging, Ashworth will quickly follow his singles and rarities collection with his fifth album, Vs. Children, of which "Optimist vs. The Silent Alarm" is part and proof that while Ashworth may be a one-man band, a one-trick pony he ain't.
Note: Be sure to check out the SXSW Megamix from Tomlab, K Records, and Asthmatic Kitty. No medley nonsense here, just lots of full-length gems.

Sam's original post 2/4/2006::
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone has been one of those monikers that kinda gives away the ending before you even press play — like Rage Against the Machine, or Insane Clown Posse. I say "has been" because now Owen Ashworth (who from some angles looks remarkably like 3hive's Jon Armstrong, see for yourself) has joined forces with producer Jherek Bischoff to expand his sound beyond its lo-fi trappings. "Young Shields" is the lead-off single from the resulting album, Etiquette, which by all indications still speaks to the Painfully Alone, just with less Casiotone (and a lot more of everything else) than before. "Cold White Christmas" is also from the new joint... Where was this track when I was putting together my Christmas podcast? Oh well, this one defies seasonality. Helicopters
Label: FlyCasualGenre: Pop, Rock
Man, recessions suck. It's all work, work, work. I've been woefully ignorant of all of these Internet happenings except perhaps Twitter because, y'know, that's just quick random thoughts, right? But what we could really use in these lean times are free MP3 downloads. So god bless you for going strong with 3Hive, Sean and Joe and Clay, because there's so much great music out there and, long hours be damned, we gots to share the sharing! Like Chicago's Helicopters, a group that got its first major exposure by winning a battle of the bands contest that gave them a slot at Lollapalooza. And they didn't stuff the ballot box, either. Like the Chicago Man of the Decade, Helicopters offer a complex yet accessible brand of hope that is a sea change from a cynicism that has prevailed for too long. It's no small feat considering they have three primary songwriters. Such musical trinities can lead to a garbled mess of influences. And while you'll get a smorgasbord on Sizing Up the Distance, from synthed new wave reduxes to driven guitar anthems to emo wails, there's a common thread of pop craftsmanship that pulls it all together. These are some finely crafted gems, and at least one of them is free. The Spring thaw is upon us, and hopefully the financial thaw is about to follow – and with Helicopters, my thaw soundtrack is coming together nicely.

Belleisle
Label: Ships at NightGenre: Pop, Slowcore
In college I was a creative writing major, and that same subject was my favorite class ever to teach in high school. Were I to still be teaching the class, I think I'd probably use the text to Belleisle's track "Talks a Lot" as a classroom sample of the "every poem is a song" idea. The song, from the 2008 album Longstanding, exhibits a narrative sense that I just love. Speaking of love, I'm starting to feel that way about Belleisle, (and it's not just because I used to go to the Frederick Law Olmstead-designed Detroit park of a similar name when I was a kid). The Montreal-based team of Rebecca Silverberg and Tasha Cyr make up the core of Belleisle, and their smooth delivery and surprisingly tasteful moments of dissonance are making me smile a whole lot, making me want to wax poetic.

Milke
Label: Gulp CommunicationsGenre: Electronic, Pop
My mother prides herself on being "with it." And compared to 99% of mothers I guess she probably is, as far as any mother's "with-it-ability" goes. People are still often surprised to find out that she's my mother since she looks too young and flashy to have a son who looks as old and frumpy as I do. And she was quite the early Facebook adopter amongst her friends and her generation. Speaking of which, this morning she expressed dismay at the fact that one of our mutual friends would use a photo of herself with her tongue sticking out as her profile picture. "It's sexually suggestive," my mother said. She may be up to date on technology, but her sexual boundaries are still quaintly old-fashioned. No mother, Shari's picture is fun and sassy, this is sexually suggestive and *gasp* highly androgynous.
This is the artwork to Milke's new single, "Love Get Out of My Way." The duo mix French electro with soulful pop vocals for a sound that's sure to be burn its way through the club scene and get the blog-o-kids all geeked. The two principles behind Milke are from opposite ends of the music world: producer Andrew Friendly has been DJing and remixing his way around the world, remixing the likes of Justice, LFO, and Darren Hayes, while singer Ra has been holed up on his own, flying way below the radar, until Friendly heard his work on the Black Grass album. Now with Milke they're writing tracks that transcend their former domains. It's big, bold, and yes, suggestive, synth-y disco. My mother will love the music, but loathe the artwork. I'm bracing for the response she's sure to fire at me on Facebook (Hi mom!) Speaking of which, here's a reminder to join us there too.

The Very Most
Label: IndiecaterGenre: Pop
I don't think anyone suffering through a harsh winter would think it's too early to start dreaming about Spring. Boise's The Very Most has been planning for this Spring for some time. In fact, they've got the next year planned out as four EPs celebrating the next four seasons. Spring is available now and Summer hits on May 1st."Today It Is Even Better" shimmers as bright as any song ever posted on these pages. Warm and fuzzy indie-pop good the whole year round. They even take on Morrissey, the king of melancholy, and sweeten up the Smiths "Cemetry Gates." If you think this sacrilegious, then you especially need a dose of The Very Most. Prepare for an imminent cheering up by the band that makes dying sound like a jangle of a good time.

Laura Gibson
Label: HushGenre: Folk, Pop
Since everyone else is doing it — all the other reviewers and critics and press types, that is — I'll avoid comparison when discussing Laura Gibson, and instead just say that her smooth, precise, detached vocal styling should appeal to anyone who likes an eccentric female singer-songwriter. "Spirited," off the forthcoming Beasts of Season, suggests an orchestrated lushness to this young Oregonian's songs, as opposed to the more classic shuffle of "Hands in Pockets," from 2006. Speaking of the new album, NPR will feature it next week in streaming audio as part of its Exclusive First Listen series.

Jason Holstrom
Label: Mill PondGenre: Pop
Clay recently wrote about not being able to post the bands you'd really like to, and I can sympathize. A few years ago I wanted to share The Hazzards, a ukulele-playing pair of girls from, of course, Brooklyn. Alas, nothing was available. If you're looking for a uke fix, though, a little Jason Holstrom can do the trick. While decidedly more island-themed than The Hazzards, who were, you know, ironic (from Brooklyn), Holstrom plays it kind of straight, dishing up clean pop songs with some palm-inspired lilt. A veteran of a bunch of Seattle bands I'd never heard of, Holstrom gave us a travelogue with his 2007 album The Theives of Kailua. Uke it up!

You've heard the Submarines by now. They're getting a lot of buzz nowadays, but even if you haven't, just think of the commercial for a certain fancy cell phone that everyone seems to have these days. See, you have heard them.
Our motto here at 3hive is "Sharing the Sharing," where we share free and legal MP3's. And there are so many times when we want to share an awesome band, but they don't have any free MP3's on offer. I've been wanting to share an old fave of mine since the start of 3hive, Jackdrag aka Jack Dragonetti, for ages. "Aviating" is one of those songs I just keep coming back to over the years. But no MP3's to share. Then he formed the Submarines with Blake Hazard, moving on from his eccentric folk-pop to more electric, pure pop. Their song "Peace & Hate" from their Declare a New State LP is one of my faves from 2006. But no MP3's to share. However, the day of sharing has finally come. For their current tour with the Morning Benders, this now husband-and-wife duo has released a free single covering the Benders' song "Waiting for a War." Patience pays, eventually.

Bishop Allen may very well be the first band that's been reviewed by three of us. Yeah, we're pretty geeked about them. Take a look at the artwork for their new album Grrr... Do you like what you see? Do you appreciate its colorful, simple whimsicality? Then you'll love the new tracks; the music marches hand-in-hand with the visual. Notice the clean white space. The music has that same crisp, airy feeling. I quickly donned headphones, wanting to squeeze my brain in between the bright melodies, the bouncy bass, snappy guitars, and the lyrics' 'ancient commonsense' poetics. The question is, will the songs last the replays while I wait another month for the other eleven songs? I'm highly suspicious the answer is yes. Songs like these remind me why 3hive exists: must...tell...others... The new album and tour begins March 10th. But a pre-order ensures you get the goods a week in advance.

Marci's her name. I think the first thing she said to me was along the lines of, "Do you like good music?" That led to a CD exchange: her Bishop Allen Charm School to me, my Postal Service Give Up to her. I also threw in my Christmas 2003 mix for good measure, just to see if she liked good music. Now I swear Bishop Allen has been used on some Fox and/or WB show, you know at the end the voiceover says "Tonight's episode of the 'OC' featured music by...(then lowering his voice an octave)...Bishop Allen." I know the natural reaction is to immediately reject all bands featured on the OC, but please, I ask you, give Bishop Allen a chance. Hmmm, when's the season premier of the 'OC'?

Not to burden you with the boring details of my life (I've already alluded to them, so now I'm beating a dead horse to boot) but my equilibrium has been shot to hell over the last three weeks and it's hampered my efforts in getting you the tunes. Thanks for bearing with 2009's slow start. Point Juncture, WA was the first thing I pulled out of the growing pile of submissions at the 'hive's HQ. What a pleasant surprise and glowing gift this album is. Unfamiliar with their previous work I can't compare it to their past efforts, but this album most definitely demands some history homework on my part. The album was recorded in the band's Portland basement, set up as a makeshift sound lab with cables running into and out of windows, amps in stairwells, a diy plate reverb in the garage, and mics in every corner. The resulting recordings sound like an earthier Stereolab with a bit more rock replacing the pop. They're also somewhat of a throwback to '90s indie rock with shimmering guitars and boy/girl vocals. Their album, Heart to Elk, is out February 10th. They've been playing a bunch of dates in and around their hometown, but no further dates have been announced. We'll keep you posted!

Intricate Machines
Label: NoneGenre: Experimental, Pop, Rock
L.A.'s Intricate Machines seem to find inspiration in their own name, taking an intricate approach in their creation of pop music. They don't necessarily pay more attention to the details in their music than anyone else; that's impossible to judge. It's just that the details and textures on which they elaborate are less obvious than most. Really, it's just my roundabout way of saying they have a roundabout way of getting to the hooks in their songs. Intricate Machines require time to soak, simmer, and settle. If you're willing to give them that time you'll find plenty of pleasures to sink your chops into. Considering the minute attention span of music consumers these days, Intricate Machines take a big risk attempting to break into the indie scene with less than immediate hooks. This ain't no microwave meal; this is some slow-cooking, crock pot rock. You may have noticed I haven't mentioned exactly what Intricate Machines sound like. This is deliberate. I don't want to contribute to the instant-gratification impulse they've obviously worked hard to avoid. Enjoy the journey.

Slumberland is putting out some great pop these days from New York bands. Recent releases from Crystal Stilts and Cause Co-Motion! will be followed up this month with the self-titled debut from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. POBPAH continue the Slumberland tradition of fine noise-pop, in the mode of Velocity Girl, the Ropers, Black Tambourine, with boy/girl harmonies, choice bits of fuzz and jangle, and crisp drums, all wrapped together by clever songwriting. Said debut album will be out February 10th, in the middle of their East Coast tour.

Freedy Johnston
Label: Singing MagnetGenre: Pop
Not being especially tech savvy, I kind of freaked out a few minutes ago when I checked the web for an article I'd written about Freedy Johnston for the old Salt Lake City-based music monthly grid. (Disclosure: about half of the 3hive crew were employed by grid.) Google says opening the defunct magazine's website might "harm your computer." Yikes! The article was called "Hoboken Dreaming," and it profiled Johnston's 1997 album Never Home. If I remember right, my interview with the NJ pop singer wasn't half bad. Anyway, the track available here comes from a disc full of covers — in this case, one by Marshall Crenshaw — released in 2008 called My Favorite Waste of Time. It's full of the kind of pop songs that Johnston's been offering up for years, tracks by The Eagles, Matthew Sweet Paul McCartney and Tom Petty, among others. And while these songs don't necessarily have the geographic specificity of some of his own work, he still plays them like he owns them.

Frederik, yet another musically gifted Swede brings us tunes we love. Na Na Ni varies from quiet, dark and pretty instrumentals to more pop-ish songs with quirky lyrics--he does them both well. And for that very reason, this December, whether on bus, train or subway, Frederik was always in my headphones, never leaving my side. The album varies from quiet, dark and pretty instrumentals to more pop-ish songs with quirky lyrics--he does them both well. Frederik has become my own personal patron saint of public transportation--always making what was happening outside my headphones prettier, more magical, less annoying. Wintermitts
Label: NoneGenre: Pop
Wintermitts is a quartet from Vancouver, that inexplicably chipper Canadian raintown that is lax on the doobie laws and serious about its pop music. Wintermitts is so serious that it features accordion and flute regularly and bring in horns, harmonica, melodica, and even glockenspiel for extra-special occasions. If that weren't enough, they're also serious conservationists — they gave away an Heirloom tomato seedling with their previous CD, aptly, Heirloom. But wait...there's more. They sing in French sometimes, and sometimes is perfect because us monolinguists can enjoy how they make an octopus a symbol for true love (really, it's not far-fetched at all once you know that octopi have three hearts) in English and then enjoy whatever blah blah blah they're saying in French on tracks like "Petit Monstre." Ox
Label: WeewerkGenre: Country, Folk, Pop
Regarding that which we would term "Americana," do they call it "Canadiana" in the land to the North? Just curious. Ox = American lo-fi alt country from Canada. They showed up on a nice little sampler from Weewerk that I've been listening to like a homemade mix-tape lately. My favorite among these tracks is probably "Transam," which with its wavering vocals and shady narrative (not to mention the Bond-themed guitar solo) kind of reminds me of those Neil Young songs about drug shipments and getting burned. The thing is, download any of these freebies from Ox's two albums and you'll find great narratives wailed over stripped down simplicity. This time less is more.

I'm certainly no longer a teenager, but Starf**ker makes me want to call my mom and tell her "I love this band named... STARF**KER" just because I will have a way to drop the f-bomb in front of her with immunity. Now I'm certainly way too grown to think of cussing a some form of small rebellion, but this album makes me feel young again! Like I can hang out until 5am on a Monday night! Like I might run off with a bass player and become West Coast Lisa! Like I don't have to go to work in an hour! Like Long Island Iced Teas are still an acceptable drink! None of this is true in any way, but I believe in an album that can make me believe these things for at least a moment. SF is from Portland, the music is dreamy, happy/sad pop and they rock my socks off. Your turn.

Original post 10/17/06:
Yes, dear readers, more Swedes, but Love is All offer a different version of Swedish pop. Theirs is frenzied, frantic, and eccentric, driven by, as Matt said in his email to the suggestion box, "disco bass." I mean, come on, "disco bass." Let me quote Matt in his entirety:
You’ve been there
An out of the way bar in some urban landscape
Floor sticks from beer
Drop ceiling too close to your head
A new band on an old stage too small for comfort
Then rowdy guitars, horns, a disco bass, drums and a chick up front singing into the back of your face
And if you haven’t, meet “Love Is All.”

Surf City

December barely rolls in and finally it looks like "winter" around Huntington Beach, CA, aka Surf City USA. "Winter" remains an ideal time to hit the waves for a chilly little surf session, and this warm, fuzzy track from our Surf City brothers down in New Zealand is the perfect soundtrack for such a jaunt. The band started when two friends connected in a video library just after one of the fellows, Davin, had purchased a four track recorder with money he received from a study grant. It sounds as if he spent more time studying the acoustics of a Volkswagen van because that's what this EP sounds like: a more cheerful Jesus and Mary Chain as recorded in a VW. No matter your geographical location or its current climate, Surf City will sun up your heart and give you cozy toes.

It's the day after Thanksgiving and I'm still thinking about eating. Even the music I'm listening to reminds me of eating. Enter Boy Eats Drum Machine. It's somewhat of a misnomer because Jon Ragel the multi-instrumentalist behind the moniker is all grown up and no, he didn't eat a drum machine. Instead, he joined forces with a who's who line-up of Portland indie rock drummers via a local drum break series called Bridgetown Breaks. Drum credits go to the drummers of Viva Voce, Talkdemonic, and Menomena among others. Ragel adds everything else and it's a plateful: turntables, synths, tenor sax, guitar, organ, and yes, bravely, vocals. RJd2 didn't even step behind the mic until his second album. From record one (Booomboxxx is his third) Ragel's armed with one turntable, one microphone and all the goodies mentioned above. The result is a scratchy, earnest pastiche of jazz, breaks, spaghetti western soundtracks, and soulful crooning. A delicious mix of sounds for the whole family to feast on this holiday season!

The Hush Now
Label: NoneGenre: Pop
A couple of weeks ago, I was putting together some mix CDs for my wife for her birthday and, as usually happens, I loaded them up with Hall & Oates. She likes them. I say I don’t. Yet the truth is that not only is there an H&O song that is indelible in our romantic history, but those goofy-looking dudes wrote some pretty fine pop songs. There, I said it. The Hush Now said it, too. The poppy quartet is fronted by Noel Kelly, who almost died listening to Queen and who draws on The Apples in Stereo and Built to Spill, among others, for comparison to their frenetic power chords and his own melancholy tenor. But, for all of their “indie-pop-shoegazer” (their words, not mine) name-dropping, it’s that touch of Darryl and John that gets me every time.

Blind Pilot

The coolest thing about Blind Pilot (besides the music...I'll get to that in a second) is that they just finished a tour of the West Coast on their BIKES! Gear and all, they pedaled their way down from Bellingham, Washington to San Diego, California. It took them just under two months. As a fellow bike commuter I'm extremely impressed by this feat. Taking the length of my commute into consideration (1.1 miles), this admiration shouldn't come as a surprise. Likewise, after one listen to these Blind Pilot songs you'll understand my admiration for their music. Simple, stripped down, yet completely majestic. "Go On, Say It" benefits from swelling strings and doubled vocals, but even those basic flourishes are just that. Flourishes, not crutches. "Paint or Pollen" proves Blind Pilot is capable of capturing and perfectly harnessing that elusive little thing we call pop music with nothing but the bare essentials.

Sam Bennett
Label: NoneGenre: Folk, Pop
Sam Bennett's music is for the post-sarcastic, post-ironic believer in &mdash what did Obama call it? oh yeah — the audacity of hope within all (some? a few?) of us. As Detroit lurches towards extinction right down the expressway from my house, I'm thinking the honest, upbeat, youthful dreaminess of this British singer-songwriter will temper the total depression that's surely going to soak southeast Michigan. (Either that, or a huge meteorite will blast us into oblivion; right now, I'll take Bennett's positivity instead.) Listen to "I Love" first to get a sense of what to expect, then check out "I Am A Lighthouse" if you're still into it. And for those of you who are all snarky, who live in a state where the unemployment rate is lower than a typical mortgage rate, for those of you who are still listening to that which celebrates our impending darkness, don't even bother. Personally, I think we need more lighthouses among us.

As I was putting this post together, and listening to "All the Way Down," I started thinking about a conversation I had a few years ago with Jen Larson. At the time, she was my student; now, she's a college grad in a half-dozen Chicago bands and is cooler by three-and-a-half times than I ever was. Anyway, one day I made a random comment about how I don't really care all that much for The Beatles. I was like, "Who really listens to them anyway?" And you can probably guess how she looked at me — This guy doesn't like The Beatles? How can he be qualified to teach me anything? This is a long way of saying that of course I was wrong, and that Nik Freitas reminds me of clean 60s and 70s pop in all the right ways. "Sun Down" might be one of the nicest little songs of the year, smooth yet inspirational (as if those are contradictory). For some fun, and a little Built to Spill style without all the noise, check out "Normal" from Freitas' 2002 debut. And if you still want to hear more, check out his website for a few more free downloads.

If you're looking for mellow, melodic and pleasant — as opposed to mellow and just plain slow or mellow and super-hyper-overcontemplative (you know what I mean, right?) — The Olympic Symphonium might work for you. This trio from Maritime Canada brings an intimacy and gentleness to the ten tracks on More in Sorrow Than in Anger, their sophomore release due out in a week or two. Though the instrumentation changes a bit here and there, the album maintains a pleasant pop cool, perfect for the change in seasons. Hickory BBQ, my current fave. Need to spice up your life? Then boogie on down to this saucy track. This thing is all groove: brown chicken, brown cow! (What's the lead-in to that punchline?) and as classic as anything off Thriller, without all that Neverland baggage. Instead you get the gorgeous and sultry Liz Wight. Priceless. Now that Santogold can be heard on light beer commercials, I'm ready for another obsession (I'm not that fickle, I just need to back off from my one-a-day dosage). 22-year-old Swede Lykke Li might just be the answer. Her songs ooze modernity and warmth — restrained rhythmic backdrops meshing seamlessly with her instrumental lyrics. And then there's her voice, that entrancing siren call... It may be too early to call her My Angel of Stockholm based on a debut album alone but dang diggity if she doesn't melt my ears and heart.

Clark from The Gay Blades sat down and recorded this song a few days after he heard that Paul Newman had passed away. He, like myself and many others, thought Paul Newman was about as good as actors, and men, got. Perhaps he just wanted to remember Newman or perhaps he wanted to offer a eulogy. Whatever it was, he picked well. In Cool Hand Luke Newman sang “Plastic Jesus” to mourn the death of his mother. Clark sings it as much more of a celebration, which you get the feeling would have suited Newman just fine.

Polara
Label: SusstonesGenre: Pop
While it had been a few years since Polara's last release, Ed Ackerson did put out a solo album last year, following it up this past May with the new Polara album Beekeeping. It continues the time-tested, 3hive-approved Polara formula of throbbing, wah-soaked mod psych fuzz-pop.
Original Post 4/9/2005: Ed Ackerson, the main man in Polara, had an earlier mod/power-pop band called the 27 Various. I first bought an album of the 27 Various just because of one sentence on the back cover. They proclaimed their avoidance of a certain musical equipment manufacturer under the song listing by declaring "The 27 Various are proud to be {manufacturer's name removed} free." I didn't like that company's amps anyway, so I bought the CD. Ed moved on to bigger and better things with Polara, whose song "Counting Down" from their album Clean is still one of my favorites. Polara's got a new EP out to whet our appetites for a full length LP in the fall; unfortunately no MP3s, so in keeping with Citizen Bird from the other day, here's some earlier examples of Polara's soulful fuzz-pop. And Ed, if you're reading, I'm still {manufacturer's name removed} free! Addendum: New EP means new MP3! Polara's now offering "Thirty Seconds" from their new EP. Enjoy!

So, I think it's great and all that Jenny Lewis is now on Warner Bros. The thing is, the WB has this super-duper security thing going on with their advance copy CDs, and I can't play the promo they sent me of Jenny's new album, Acid Tongue. I tried it on my computer, I tried it in the car, and the players just kept spitting it out. Yes, it's important to protect one's recordings from piracy, but it seems you certainly can reach a point where there's too much security and not enough liberty. In this case, I'd love to hear more of Lewis' arresting voice, especially in collaboration with Elvis Costello, Benji Hughes and everybody else the publicists say is on the album. If the one free and legal download is suggestive of anything, it's that I totally want to hear more. I trust that you all can fill me in on how the rest of Acid Tongue sounds.

Now, Now Every Children
Label: AfternoonGenre: Pop, Rock
How many of us were in a band in 10th grade? And for those who answered yes, how many are still in that band? Cacie Dalager and Brad Hale started playing together in 10th grade, and, having finished school, last year added two other members to round out their lineup and begin doing this band thing for real. Cacie's innocently earnest voice steals the show, while the music swirls around her, managing to push her higher still. That's the danger with their formula; can the music match the level of the singing? Now, Now Every Children make it sound simple, by keeping it...well...simple. Now after listening, for those who answered no, how many of us wish we had been in a band in 10th grade?

Rickolus
Label: NoneGenre: Other, Pop
You reap what you share. Here's proof. A reader tipped me off to this prolific Floridian after encountering Radical Face on 3hive. Something's obviously been brewing off the coast down there in Jacksonville, FL. Rickolus is one Richard Colado, who sings for the band The Julius Airwave, and he can't seem to sit still for long. Below are songs from each of his five albums, recorded in as many years, with probably double the friends (including Ben Cooper AKA Radical Face). The recordings are inspired both thematically and sonically by everything from Colado's children, video game music, anime, friends, to his own backyard. Winter's Daughter is an intimate and introspective epic fable of, presumably, Colado's children. American Backyard has a certain back-porch-folksy feel, Video Game Birthday Party's darkly festive mood depends heavily on Casios and Korgs, and Soundtrack... predictably, but not disappointingly, sounds more cinematic. With the exception of the latter, Colado's melancholic vocals accompany most of the songs. The quality and quantity of Rickolus' music is worth way more than the word-of-mouth plug I'm offering here. And considering every song from every album is yours for the sharing it wouldn't hurt donating a dime or two when you drop by for more downloads.

Jessica and Kat, who unlike me are both young and hip, have been talking about Fleet Foxes since there was snow on the ground. I swear I checked the band out in February and there was nothing available to share, but who knows? Maybe that's just an excuse for being so late on highlighting a CMJ #1 band, a Rolling Stone favorite, etc. etc. So, here goes: Seattle's Fleet Foxes offer up fuzzy, old-fashioned-sounding pop songs, vaguely reminiscent of the era depicted in the album cover. (SubPop's got deep pockets, so I bet Bruegel got a decent commission for this one). With just one EP and one LP under their belts, Fleet Foxes have plenty of time to carve out a little musical turf of their own, and a hipster following ready to hang on faithfully (for a year or two, at least).

Get ready to cut the rug, because this here is a bumping dose of pure dance energy from this indie supertrio. Dan Geller and Mark Mallman grew up together in Wisconsin playing chess and trading mixtapes. After graduation Geller, whose mixtapes often included The Smiths, The Cure and New Order, moved to Athens, GA, started up Kindercore Records, and began recording pop-tronic gems under the name I Am The World Trade Center. Mallman, who had contributed bands like Pink Floyd and Velvet Underground to their mixtapes, went the art school route and began recording over the top piano pop under his own name. The two reconnected and wanted to blend their styles of music. That's when drummer Aaron Lemay stepped in. When he heard the demos he said, "I can't let you two fools attempt this madness alone." Then there were three fools making foolishly fun arena dance music. I can imagine a grafting of Daft Punk and Queen producing a sound a lot like this.

At the gym, I usually listen to (here’s where the “complete tool” part comes in) This American Life or some other talky podcast where I don’t have to worry about (tool again) consistently high-energy beats. But praise be to Pittsburgh’s Greg Gillis, whose Night Ripper from 2006 is a (the behind the times part) mashup masterpiece that (tool) keeps my adrenaline PUMPED, man! For my money, Z-Trip is still the high-water mark of such guerrilla hip-hop-classic-rock-punk-pop-whatever mixing, but what Gillis does with the riffs from The Pixies, the Strokes and Weezer in “Hold Up” helps me burn 500 calories in two minutes. Girl Talk’s newest, Feed the Animals, is available here for whatever price you want to pay, which I’ve already done so that I can take my workout to anotha level of behind-the-times toolness. Join me and feel the burn!

4 Bonjour's Parties
Label: MushGenre: Pop
Their name sounds as if something's been lost in translation, but you won't lose a thing if you invest a bit of time or money into Japan's 4 Bonjour's Parties. This seven piece Toyko ensemble shapes all manner of instruments into one gorgeous kaleidoscope of sound. Woodwinds and synths, glockenspiels and guitars blend into epic twists of modern-day chamber pop. The debut from 4 Bonjour's Parties, Pigments Drift Down To The Brook, sounds like a long distance pen pal reply to the High Llamas or Stereolab; their sweet boy/girl vocals evoke a tone similar to contemporary Icelandic artists Múm and Sigur Ros. The band signed to Japan's And Records right lickety-split after opening for Clue to Kalo and I expect you'll take an immediate liking to them as well.

Santogold
Label: Mad DecentGenre: Beats, Electronic, Hip Hop, Pop
I know I've been taking the "summer hours" concept a little too seriously, but it's hard to do anything but enjoy summer when you have something stuck in your iPod like Top Ranking, Diplo's "mixtape" treatment of Santogold's debut album. Diplo's dub-bass-electro-hop concoction provides a textured playground for Santi White's angelic and sassy brand of new wave. Unreleased mixes of Santi tracks bounce in and out between cuts from Three 6 Mafia, Benga, B-52s, Ratatat, and Sir Mix-a-Lot—there's a smile around every corner. (If this sounds familiar, Diplo did the same for the last big indie "it" girl, M.I.A., on the eve of her debut album with the 2004 mixtape Piracy Funds Terrorism.)
Now, if you're picturing me just swaying away in a shady hammock you're only partly right. Top Ranking also got me off my butt and running every morning (five weeks and counting!). And it's been the soundtrack to some spontaneous summer grill action... I don't mean to overpromise but I guarantee it will make your life better—even if that means you forget to update your blog for over a month.
These tracks are some tasty Santogold remixes featured on Diplo's Mad Decent label, though they're not even on Top Ranking. For that, you'll want to head over to turntablelab.com and drop $12 for the 75-minute mix.

Mac McCaughan — either with Superchunk or solo as Portastatic — pretty much got me through the 1990s, much to the annoyance of my friends and girlfriends. Yes, every song does sound the same, and no, I don't care. "I Wanna Know Girls" is like unconditional love for me, a song that I've been waiting for, maybe without knowing it, for five years or more. " I wanna know girls but only love one," "and yeah my love weighs a ton." (So do I, with the sympathy pounds I've added during my wife's pregnancy, but that's another story.) It's nice to see Mac's songwriting mature from last decade's boozy lovesickness, and it's also nice, for me at least, to hear that the songs do still sound the same.

Marching Band
Label: Urband & LazarGenre: Pop
I dig the quick and dirty track Clay posted yesterday from The Real Losers. Good and raw. It reminds me of a knockout Kafka saying (for the original quotation replace "listen to" with "read" and "records" for "books"), "I think we ought to listen to only the kind of records that wound and stab us. If the record we are listening to doesn't wake us up with a blow on the head, what are we listening to it for?"
Marching Band is a soothing antidote to those records that leave you bleeding. This Swedish duo is making quite a name for themselves on L.A. radio, which in turn has plenty of music supervisors geeked on Marching Band's carefree indie pop. Obvious comparisons can be drawn to The Shins, but I immediately thought of Field Music when I heard "For Your Love." "Make Up Artist" has a similar disco pop groove to the underrated Phoenix. The band generously shares tracks from the three EPs before their debut album, which is available now. I'll quit yapping so you can make your own connections to your favorite artist, because there's really something here for any purveyor of the popular side of rock 'n' roll.

Plastilina Mosh
Label: NacionalGenre: Other, Pop
No matter if you speak español or inglés, you're gonna get a kick out of the new Plastilina Mosh tracks. That is unless, you're completely lacking any sense of fun. For those of you unfamiliar with P. Mosh, the duo out of Monterrey, Mexico first imported their bombastic, south-of-the-border-B-52s-meet-Beck party tunes just about a decade ago. They worked with the Dust Brothers and Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf (all of whom worked with Beck early in his career). They enjoyed a healthy amount of commercial success with the track "Mr. P Mosh." Staying true to their divergent sound, Plastilina Mosh once again mix it up on their new album, All U Need is Mosh. The band can cross styles and tempos just as easy as they cross cultures and languages. One fantastic groove to get on.

Inara George
Label: EverlovingGenre: Pop
It never hurts to have the right friends in the right places. Inara George takes full advantage of an old family friend on her new album An Invitation, out now on Everloving Records. Lucky for her, and us, the friend she's collaborated with on this album is Van Dyke Parks, the arranger of the last forty years. Haven't heard of him? Certainly you've heard him. Suffice it to say he arranged songs and wrote lyrics with Brian Wilson for the Beach Boys' ever elusive Smile album. His work with Ms. George is quite different however. Parks arranged airy, playful compositions for a large orchestra to accompany George's rich vocal performance. The album is an organic foil to Inara George's work with her electronic work with Greg Kurstin as The Bird and The Bee. I love the loose, improvised feel to these tracks. It's as if I'm watching Inara on stage in a musical, a love story, and I've suspended every shred of disbelief to the point that I'm sure she's in love with me. And it takes days to chase her voice out of my head and shake those floaty feelings the have left me giddy.

Chad VanGaalen
Label: Flemish EyeGenre: Pop
I'm kind of busy right now watching Canada vs. Cuba in Olympic baseball on CBC, but I will say this: Chad VanGaalen's trembly, trippy, falsetto-ed pop makes a lousy soundtrack for watching athletics on television. (For the most part: the rocking "Graveyard," available for free download below, might fit in during the half inning breaks where t-shirts are tossed into the crowd.) VanGaalen, of Calgary, crafts stylish and hip songs with a strong D.I.Y. vibe. Lewis & Clarke
Label: La Societe ExpeditionnaireGenre: Experimental, Pop
I know, I know... If you're at all like me, you were probably pretty stoked about a band named after Thomas Jefferson's intrepid explorers of the Louisiana Purchase, until you noticed the "e" up there that's not really on the end of William Clark's name. Then you realized the band's name refers to the correspondence between C.S. Lewis and Arthur C. Clarke, not the Corps of Discovery. (Ok, the band website helped me out on that last part.) And then you download the ten minutes of "Before It Breaks You" and listen to it, and then it's over before you realize it and the whole time you've been bathed in the musical equivalent of sunlight filtered through a grove of aromatic, soft-needled southern pines, or something similarly tranquil and pleasant. Lewis & Clarke call their sound "avant chamber folk," but don't let that turn you off. Give them more than a few minutes, and see if you like what you get back. I did.

The Wedding Present
Label: ManifestoGenre: Pop, Rock
It's been three years since The Wedding Present re-emerged from the ashes of Cinerama with the album Take Fountain. They're back with what could be labeled David Gedge's "L.A. album." He lived in West Hollywood while he wrote these songs and it comes through in both tone and content (tons of references to L.A. landmarks, including the album title, El Rey, named after the famous mid-Wilshire venue). That said, the album was recorded in Chicago with the legendary Steve Albini (who also produced the seminal Seamonsters album), who roughs up each tune with the appropriate gloom and grit to match Gedge's trademark forlorn lyrics—tempered occasionally by bassist Terry De Castro's sweet vocals. Keep an eye out for tour dates (yes, Joe, I bought tickets for the Pontiac show) for your chance to catch one of the loudest shows I've ever witnessed.
Original post from 12/23/2004:
Multiple Choice:
Since 1985, The Wedding Present have provided
A) a distinct solace for those utterly steeped in general feelings of jealousy and rebuke.
B) David Gedge, a lead singer with a charmingly lousy voice and a ridiculously thick Leeds accent.
C) fantastic guitar riffs, faster in the carefree '80s and wiser in the new millenium.
D) reliably good Brit-pop for longer than the flavor-of-the-week has been alive.
E) all of the above.

Stereolab
Label: 4ADGenre: Pop
It'd be safe to say we're all mad fans of Stereolab. A quick search of our archives reveals nine references to Stereolab as we introduced you to new artists by appealing to your taste in international, space-age pop. There are many more bands that aspire to Stereolab's neu-lounge sound, but few can keep up with the quality and quantity of output. Never wandering far from their signature sound or formula, Stereolab astonishingly remains relevant and refreshing. For this, their 11th, album the band once again used Sean O'Hagan as producer and arranger. According to Tim Gane, the album began as seventy tiny drum loops on top of improvised piano and vibraphone chords. They sped up some tracks, slowed down others and worked their way to "a collection of purposefully short, dense, fast pop songs." The track here is definitely one of my favorites from the album, a groovin' romp where horns and organ build to bursting point, threatening to release contagiously good vibrations. All the while Ms. Sadier keeps her perennial cool, which always melts my butter.
FYI: While supplies last, pre-order the album (street date: August 19th) and receive a limited edition 7-inch. The band tours North America in September and October.

Dub Narcotic Sound System
Label: K RecordsGenre: Pop, Rock
Sam's recent post of Shelleyan Orphan had me looking through my vinyl, something I do maybe four times a year these days. I don't own either of the bands from his post, but I did stumble across an old gem from Dub Narcotic Sound System, formed in 1993 and named after the Dub Narcotic Studio, the studio of Calvin Johnson, founder of K Records. While my personal favorite "Teenage Timebomb" is not available for free download, the funky smoothness of Calvin's Pacific Northwest, baritone white boy rap on "Handclappin'" is.

Shelleyan Orphan
Label: One Little IndianGenre: Folk, Pop
As some of you know, I spent the first half of the '90s living in Provo, Utah. I worked at two CD stores during that time and it's quite possible that I sold more CDs by The Sundays than any other band. Perhaps there was a common misinterpretation of the Fourth Commandment but Provo couldn't get enough of The Sundays. Which leads to my story...
There was this guy who came in to the CD store one night and he said, "I love The Sundays. Do they have any other albums out?"
"No," I said, "but if you like them you might enjoy Shelleyan Orphan. Similar female vocals and even more interesting instrumentation and song structures."
"Hmm," he said. "I don't know. Do they sound just like The Sundays?"
"They're even better," I said, handing him a copy of Century Flower (the most Sundays-ish of their three albums). "If you don't think so, you can return the CD." Keep in mind, according to store policy I could not return opened merchandise, so this would have meant me buying back as used and paying him the difference. My co-workers warned me, this guy wasn't going to go for something as adventurous as Shelleyan Orphan. But I was sure he'd not only appreciate my recommendation but tell all his friends about his new find.
Same time the next day, he walks in. "I didn't like it. It doesn't sound anything like The Sundays."
That's when I realized, to go back to the Bible, I was casting pearls before swine. I wasn't going to be able to talk him into liking Shelleyan Orphan. So I paid the man from my own pocket and told him he wasn't getting any more advice from me. "Let me know when the new Sundays album comes out," he said, as he walked out the door.
Shelleyan Orphan disbanded shortly thereafter, no doubt disheartened that some dork in Utah didn't think they sounded enough like The Sundays. After 15 years of soul-searching and playing in other bands, Caroline Crawley and Jemaur Tayle have recorded a new Shelleyan Orphan record, We Have Everything We Need, available in October 2008. Please enjoy the bluegrass-inspired single, which I will admit sounds nothing like The Sundays.

The Locals e-mailed me some time ago suggesting that their indie-rock and my literary-minded randomness would work well together. (Hey, thanks for reading the posts!) Plus, they're from Chicago and I used to live there too. And they've got this thing for a Danger Boy doll (go ahead, check the website) and 3hive's good friend Dave used to go by that exact same nickname. Also, The Locals totally have this tight '80s kind of thing going on, and I just love that sound. Therefore, I'm happy to offer up their hard work for free and legal download. And to congratulate the band on the recent release of Big Picture, their new album. And to say, to any reader who made it this far, "Tidal Wave" is pop beauty, catchy and hook-filled and summery and fun. "Big Picture" and "Perfect World" are more calm, more retrospective, but with nice heavy guitars and big drums. And The Locals rock, straight up.

The Morning Benders
Label: +1Genre: Pop
The Morning Benders are no strangers to covers as they've been known to record a quickie or two or seven as the case may be. The Bedroom Covers represents their latest round of covers all compiled in one handy-dandy free EP. The 'Benders have teamed up with a few of us bloggers to spread the love one lo-fi recording at a time. The band recorded the songs using a laptop and one microphone. Most of the songs were recorded in one take, with the exception of an occasional vocal or guitar overdub. My favorite of the lot? Their charming (they're all charming!) version of the Phil Spector-produced "He's a Rebel" by The Crystals. This was a #1 song back in 1962. The song ends up sounding like at outtake from Zumpano's Look What the Rookie Did. More importantly, these tracks remind me how much I love The Morning Benders' crisp, freshly laundered pop songs. I'm gonna pull out their album, Talking Through Tin Cans, and pin the songs up on the laundry line out back where they can twist and flutter in the wind all summer long.
Below is the track list for the covers EP. Keep checking back and I'll update when and where you can track down the other songs. I've also included a few covers previously recorded by the band.

The Chap

Check The Chap's label page and there are two lines in the "About" section, one of which reads, "The Chap: have never been influenced by anyone or anything at any time, ever." While I appreciate and even support their refusal to apologize for or explain their influences, I don't believe them. I do believe in letting the music speak for itself. So stop reading this and download these songs and make up your own mind while I explain the comparison I'm about to make. My take, highly influenced by the mass quantities of '80s music I've been listening to lately, is this: The Chap deftly juggles bits and pieces of Gang of Four, XTC, Queen, Men Without Hats, and Kraftwerk for a capricious rock 'n' roll dance party. Their third album, Mega Breakfast, is evidence of a quirky, lo-fi band that's pulled out all the stops and plans on playing stadiums. Do yourself a favor and lower your guard down while listening so you can fully revel in The Chap's merrymaking. Their album cover is a mylar balloon dog whose nose has been dipped in chocolate and sprinkles for crying out loud. If you don't get a kick out of this record it may be time for a swift kick to the head. (Be sure to watch the video for the album's standout track).

I think it's pretty safe to say that you won't be hearing about Zooey from many other music sites. A few weeks ago the band sent out an email blast and they forgot to BCC their mailing list. Ouch! Poor Zooey got an earful about that faux pas. Instead of drinking the Haterade I thought I'd listen in on what Zooey had to offer. I was pleasantly surprised by their semi-easy-listening-electronica. Zooey recently remixed "Change of Destination" by Monade and, if you can imagine, they made it even bubblier than the original. "Little Thunder" is brand new music while "You Gave Your Love to Me Softly" and "Rendez-vous" are from their 2005 self-released LP Pique-nique et jeux dans l'eau, which you can download in its entirety. GROK
Label: DedearGenre: Experimental, Pop, Rock
I hope you don't like this song very much. Or, better put: I'd advise you not to get too attached to this song, show up at a GROK show, and expect them to recreate this recording live. See, GROK's got a thing or two to prove, and that thing or two has plenty to do with improvisation. They have no songs (at least not in that written, structured, rehearsed, performed sense of "song"), the songs they do have are performed only once so that every GROK show is a one-of-a-kind, highly unique experience, and audience members act as collaborators by suggesting a theme for a song, playing an instrument, or spinning the Wheel of Chordal Destiny. Their music sounds just as fun and whimsical, as is the case in "Pink Shirt." Don't worry if you find yourself listening to "Pink Shirt" more than once. To disagree with GROK is ultimately GROK. Bell
Label: NoneGenre: Pop
Is Olga Bell a Bjork sound-a-like? Not exactly. She probably gets asked this a lot, so to combat the similarities between their grand and ethereal Scandinavian voices--she cleverly decided to answer this question by starting with tribute. covering a Bjork track! She's firmly not-Bjork. Nor is she Bjork-lite. When I first heard Bell, I was so-so on the whole thing. As when smelling a glass of wine, I was getting over-strong notes of the aforementioned Icelandic star and Radiohead. But my friend Seth kept telling me how much he loved her, so I kept listening. Where I ended up with was this: Bell is a singer whose personality comes through in her voice, a love for the staccato beat and someone I have come to really like listening to. I also love that she is Russian born, Alaska-reared and has somehow ended up in my own beloved Brooklyn. She also calls her laptop and instrument. And while I have been a detractor re: "laptops are music!" for ages, I'm kind of willing to buy that in her case.

Two Hours Traffic
Label: BumsteadGenre: Pop, Rock
There's something to be said for a 4-40 a.c. song — all four windows down, driving 40 mph — especially in these eco-focused times. Sure, it's a throw-away song, the music version of IKEA's disposable furniture, but like those $7 end tables such songs are absolutely necessary. How else to get through humidity higher than my grandpa's age without sunny pop-rock flowing through the mini van? Two Hours Traffic helps out with "Stuck for the Summer," off their most recent release Little Jabs, winner of the Best Pop Album in the Canadian East Coast Music Awards. Two Hours Traffic hails from Prince Edward island, a locale in which the 4-40 a.c. plan would likely be grand: windswept maritime scenes, salty breezes, gas prices even higher than here in the States. And so, congrats to the winners and thanks for the needed function of songs like yours. One more thing, for Sean: after your job this year, I bet you and your patient ears recognize where the band gets its name from, eh?

Back to being made fun of...Alisa also gave be a good jabbing when I showed her my juggling skills (I can't believe she actually married me when I think about it). Can you see where this is going? Yes, I also used to be a proud owner of a unicycle. Which brings us to the songs for today by Unicycle Loves You. The playful tone of "Hawaii" brings back the simple rushes of thrilling my friends by changing nickels to dimes or bunny-hopping on my unicycle. Yes, I was a royal geek, and thankfully Unicycle Loves You lets me man up and admit it. I mean their singer Jim Carroll still dresses like my mom dressed me in grade school (note the guy in the vest), back when I would steal lunch money to buy my friends ice-cream or Wacky Packages. But that's a completely different story, one that shares a theme with "Highway Robbery." And no kids, stealing is not OK.

Cannonball Jane
Label: GaddycatGenre: Beats, Hip Hop, Pop
Whenever I hear the name Jane I can't help thinking about a high school friend of mine (spelled "Jayne"). She was one of maybe three people from my school I hung out with my senior year. When I attended a reunion recently my wife asked me, not facetiously, "Are you even going to know anyone here?" The only person I could think of was Jayne, but I knew she wouldn't be there. Like me, Jayne was slightly anti-social. As I expected, no Jayne. But you know how high school reunions put you in that nostalgic mood/mode? Thus affected, I did some internet sleuthing and actually tracked Jayne down, an entire continent away, hoping to say hello and catch up. I left two awkward voice messages (it's impossible to sound casual, as if I hadn't talked to her for a week when in fact it had been years). Did Jayne call back? Nope. Made me feel even more awkward, like I was some creepy internet stalker!
I think if Jayne's personality were more like Cannonball Jane's music we would've had a nice conversation, shared a few good laughs, and traded our latest listens and reads. See, Cannonball Jane is playful, colourful (Jayne was from England—she made me use British spellings), and obviously up for some fun. By day Cannonball Jane teaches elementary school. By night Jane, aka Sharon Hagopian, fires up the beatbox, guitars, synths and gadgets and records a groovin' pastiche of hip hop, new wave, and sixties pop. A mix of Soul Coughing and Luscious Jackson, Mary Tyler Moore and Solex. This is the kind of woman I'd trust to educate my children and school me in the ways of beats and breaks and dance party extravaganzas. Hey, sounds a lot like Alisa, the woman I married. Who, by the way, tracked down one of her old high school friends during a reunion year. And he called her back! Who wouldn't? She's fun like that.

Electric President
Label: MorrGenre: Pop
My promo copy of Electric President's new album Sleep Well is practically worn out already, but luckily, the release date for the new disc is just a few days away. Dreamy like the last one, but dark and brooding too, Ben Cooper and Alex Kane are still rocking the electrorganic (it does work, Sam) in the available-for-free-download, opening track "Monster," as well as a bunch of other great spins on the disc. Check out the tinkly little piano in this song, the falsetto vocals in "We will Walk through Walls," and the oh-so-true chorus of "It's an Ugly Life," all of these backed by occasional boops and bips and computer scratches.

Sam's original post: 01/21/06
Jacksonville, Florida's Ben Cooper and Alex Kane had been collaborating as Radical Face Versus Phalex Sledgehammer for a couple years, when they mercifully decided to change their name to Electric President. They put together a five-song EP called You Have the Right to Remain Awesome which found its way to the Morr Music offices in Berlin. Morr now brings us their debut long-player which is nothing short of dreamy. Electric President's electrorganic (just made that term up) pop fits right alongside labelmates Lali Puna, Styrofoam, b.fleischmann, and Mum. Ben also records solo as Radical Face (hence the duo's original moniker) and should have an album out (also on Morr) later this year. He also makes really nice paintings. And he's only 23. Yeah, I know...showoff.

Tender Forever
Label: K RecordsGenre: Electronic, Pop
Melanie, my favorite French street-artist-turned-K-Records-stalwart, has released her second LP Wider. Her live show that I caught several years is one of my favorite live shows of the past ten years. To quote myself in our Junk Drawer: "Holy moly, Melanie was incredible, part musician/poet/child/dancer/manipulator/artist/provacateur/comic/songwriter. And her voice live is so loud, so strong, so filling." She set up on the floor in front of the stage for maximum audience interaction, which involved her punching me in the stomach, taking and wearing my wife's coat, and rifling through the pockets of my friend Vince. With her new album, she continues to craft her electronic performance-pop, with sweet melodies and varying tempos, harmonizing with herself about love and life.
Original post 10/12/2005:
As previously mentioned, my personal goal of attending all shows by 3hive bands in my hometown has been quite a failure, coming in right now at about 3 out of who knows...10? 20? 30? That's gonna improve slightly when Tender Forever comes to town on November 6 with His Royal Highness of Indiedom Calvin Johnson. A musical journey from Bordeaux, France, to Olympia, Washington, can only mean one thing: exquisite Franco-American pop. Melanie Valera and friends, see you soon.

Sean's in L.A., so maybe he knows about The Hectors. I'm in Michigan, and all I know about is the Red Wings, the Pistons, and Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's text messages. Therefore, this old-school SoCal indie pop-rock sounds fresh to me, like Pavement meets a girl who can sing. But back to this whole regional thing... Sean, a Lakers-Pistons is possible, especially if the Celtics' airplane gets lost and flies around over Canada for a few days. The Stanley Cup's in the bag. Maybe check out The Hectors in San Diego in June? I've never been there....

Daniel Ahearn
Label: NoneGenre: Pop
While Daniel Ahearn's group project, Ill Lit, was one of our earliest posts, they never really enjoyed proper coverage on this site. Now's the time to make up for such an oversight. Ahearn emerges with a solo EP almost two years after Ill Lit's self-released album, Tom Cruise. To be honest, it's not much different from Ill Lit's electro-tinged americana sound. That's a good thing. The difference is Ahearn wrote the songs on Pray for Me By Name so that he felt comfortable playing them alone with an acoustic guitar. Rather than painting himself into a corner, this restraint, this simplification allows Ahearn to create a small masterpiece in "Down for the Count." A gritty keyboard groove opens the song with a bounce, then smoothes out giving way to a soft, sweet, soaring chorus. Don't let the gentle tone fool you. Ahearn couches both the ups and downs, the sunshine and the Santa Anas, of West Coast living in one friendly tune.

The Lodger
Label: SlumberlandGenre: Pop
Has it really been a year since The Lodger released their first album Grown-Ups? Here they are again with their new LP Life is Sweet, not even twelve months later, turning it up a notch with crisp production to further refine their Yorkshire pop sensibilities. Let's just hope that they can keep up this pace!
Original Post 6/17/2007:
I'm starting to worry. Maybe cause it was my birthday recently I'm getting all nostalgic. Yes, I know things go in cycles, and the past few years of music have been heavily borrowing from the 80's, but that was my decade. I would hold a tape recorder up to the radio to record Wang Cheung. I bought Tears for Fears on tape, Joy Division on vinyl, the Smiths on CD, Camper van Beathoven on a t-shirt, and the Cure on a poster. I saw the Descendents live and Dance Craze and Athens, Ga, Inside/Out on VHS. The 80's were good to me. But it's the next cycle that's starting to worry me. Don't tell me you haven't seen the kids starting to sport long stringy hair and flannel shirts. We're on a fine line between the next "scene" going hippie or retro Pearl Jam. Let's just get it out of the way before my kids hit their teenage years.
The Lodger and their fine Yorkshire guitar pop, though, ain't going down without a fight. While influenced and even motivated by the songwriting of such guitar pop stalwarts as the Wedding Present and the Housemartins, this Leeds band's debut album Grown-ups, adds their own personal touch and a host of modern sensibilities, like crisp melodies, high-energy honesty and reverb-free drums, all evidenced in the outstanding "Let Her Go." Just what an old fella needs to feel young again.

Julie Ocean
Label: Transit of VenusGenre: Pop
The heat wave blasting Los Angeles has got me pining for summer and sparkly bright summery tunes. I'm swimming in the latter thanks to Julie Ocean. Featuring Jim Spellman of Velocity Girl and a handful of other post-punk DC notables, Julie Ocean does 10 punky-pop songs in just over 25 minutes. They're sweet, catchy, and quick. Remember the Christopher Walken "cowbell" sketch? I can imagine Julie Ocean playing in that sketch and Walken telling them, "you know what you need are more handclaps." All their songs are handclap friendly, but thankfully they don't indulge themselves until the very end of the record. Just like Walken says of BÖC, Julie Ocean "appears to have a dynamite sound."

Soccer Team
Label: DischordGenre: Pop
Must admit, I've always wanted to have a 3hive soccer team. Many years ago, I scored over Jon's head straight from a kickoff while he was in goal. And my most vivid memory of playing against Sam is blocking one of his shots with my face, only for the ball to drop right back onto his foot so he could slam it into the back of the net anyway, leaving me with a red face (due, in part, to a bloody nose). So maybe it would be better to have 3hive sponsor a soccer team, you know with our logo plastered on the front of the team's jerseys.
Ryan and Melissa, both employees of Dischord at one point, included this little gem on their 2006 LP 'Volunteered' Civility and Professionalism. Yes, it's a bit old, but it's new to me and I'm kicking myself for missing it until now. The LP displays their very clever, lo-fi pop, moving from fuzzy and effects-laden guitar, to pounding drums, strumming acoustic guitars, and everywhere in between, recorded to 8- and 4-track tape. That resulting tape hiss? I think they wanted us to hear it.

The Awkward Stage
Label: MintGenre: Pop, Rock
The Awkward Stage ended up being one of my happy finds, with "West Van Girl," "1000 Teenage Hearts," and the title track from Shane Nelken's debut album, Heaven is for Easy Girls, all being worth at least $.99 at the legal download site of your choice. Hopefully the band's sophomore spin, Slimming Mirrors, Flattering Lights — out in June, two days before my birthday! (hint, hint, Mint Records) — will offer up another set of smart Canadian pop from the sensitive and supremely talented Nelken. "Anime Eyes" is a rocking little piece of candy sweetly luring us in.

Original post: 09/28/06
About The Awkward Stage, my friend Tim O. has this to say: "Here's an album in the grand tradition of geek rock, as in Weezer, Beck, etc., even though The Awkward Stage doesn't sound like any of them. Strong melodies and pop hooks lead a slight voice through cleverly-titled, literate and ultimately pathetic songs. Even the cover art depicts lead singer Shane Nelken going to prom with a blow-up doll while wearing a retainer and head gear. In fact, I heard Joe had the same head gear in middle school." Wait a minute, there... Well, that's enough from Tim O. on the subject. Oh no, wait, he has one more thing to say. "While the title track claims 'The Morons are Winning,' The Awkward Stage are clearly figthing back." Brilliantly pithy, T.O. Look for Heaven is for Easy Girls on October 10.

This warm fuzzy feeling reminds me to check in on the label that consistently provides me with warm fuzzy music: Labrador. They just signed a Stockholm duo, The Sound of Arrows, who dress as if they're living on a polygamist ranch in Texas and sound like The Avalanches mixing Placebo. I look forward to hearing more from these pleasantly pastel pals when their 9-song EP is out in May.

Stars Like Fleas
Label: Home-TapesGenre: Experimental, Folk, Pop
Stars Like Fleas is a Brooklyn-based collective of musicians you probably haven't heard of from bands you probably have heard of (especially if you're a regular to 3hive). At the nucleus are Montgomery Knott (vocals) and Shannon Fields (everything else). It was Shannon who emailed us to say that Stars Like Fleas will be releasing their third album after "a fair bit of wandering-in-the-desert time." That's gotta be some kind of crazy metaphor 'cause they recorded the album in Iceland—with Bjork's producer, Valgeir Sigurðsson—and I don't think there are any deserts there. Wherever it was that they wandered, they appear to have lost their penchant for unstructured, free jazz compositions and replaced it with a knack for lushly-orchestrated pop epics. The single, "I Was Only Dancing," is a precise audio replication of a cloudburst falling on parched earth, sandwiched between slices of warm sunlight. Bathe/bask in it and you'll see why it's already one of my favorites of the year.

Martina Topley Bird
Label: IndependienteGenre: Beats, Pop
I was surprised to find these tracks in my in-box. They're quite the weekend treat. As you might imagine I spend a fair amount of time scouring the web for new music and I haven't heard a peep from the Independiente label since DeeJay Punk-Roc's '98 release of Chicken Eye. Obviously I'm not listening closely enough. They're Travis' UK label. OK, so I've got some catching up to do. And besides the occasional David Holmes or Diplo track she sings on, I haven't spent quality time with Ms. Topley-Bird. That's gonna change too. Today. String theorists searching for other dimensions just may find what they're looking for if they'd get strung out on some MTB. Topley-Bird's voice carries me to other worlds, worlds I first discovered listening to Tricky's Maxinquaye where she played the beautifully haunting foil to his gravelly trip-hop hero. Topley-Bird herself is off on her own inter-genre exploration with co-pilot/producer Dangermouse. Whether it's the dusty after hours slow-mo of "Valentine," the playfully seductive "Carnies," or this bumpin' club remix of "Poison" Martina Topley Bird's buttery-rich voice easily lilts your soul enough to keep you just on this side of an out of body experience.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin
Label: PolyvinylGenre: Pop
Hey, I'm only a week late on the new Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. Their last record was my favorite-album-that-took-me-a-year-to-listen-to. The CD kept getting shuffled to the bottom of my 'listen to' stack. Their name haunted me. I just couldn't let go of a band called SSLYBY. To this day I still throw up a little in my mouth when I think of how much joy I missed by not having SSLYBY in my life sooner. From what I've heard, album number two from the Show Me State's favorite indie sons, keeps the charming pop meter cranked up to eleven. Nothing groundbreaking except to say that their sophomore album is anything but sophomoric. New album and new tour NOW.

Original post: 11.30.06:
Their name will fill your mouth with clumsy words, their music will fill your head with sweet melodies. Less dour than Bright Eyes, less polished than The Shins, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin were shooting for the "Locals Only" bin at their hometown music store in Springfield, Missouri when they recorded Broom, but missed their mark, hitting the stars instead. They're already minor stars among those MP3 blog thingies...maybe I should read those more often. My day would've been brightened earlier by these young fellows. My opinion on and knowledge of Brazilian music and film are about the same: I like what I see and hear, but I can't claim to have heard a whole lot. Although I will say that if you haven't seen City of God you haven't truly lived. That's only a little bit exaggerated. I like what I heard of this Kassin+2 as well. Apparently they're a pretty big deal on their home soil, and this record is a big deal for how, gasp, accessible it is. Yep, "Ya Ya Ya" is probably one of the more edgy tracks on the album—most of the rest plays out with the bossa nova warmth you might expect from the various members of the Gilberto clan. If they can get experimental with the same gusto that they get smooth, they'll be spending plenty of time on my iPod as the weather gets warmer and the days get longer.

In one of Douglas Coupland's novels, maybe All Families are Psychotic, there's a passage about how we lived in a golden age, without pain or fear, something like that... When I found Tappan Zee one day last year while digging around the Internet, that idea came back to me. Check out their introduction on the Wormco website — "It's 1999. . . . . and what have we got to show for it?" etc. Just a little reflection, like finding an old newspaper from before you were married or had kids, from before the war, before 9/11. Original post 10/8/2007:
My documented love affair with Slumberland Records continues with Sarandon, the South London pop, post-pop, post-punk noise outfit and not the American actress. Led by sole remaining founding member Crayola, Sarandon are irrepressibly catchy with slightly bizarre lyrics. They're simple and possibly quite mad, to use the British meaning of the word, which explains why my seven year old says "The Linguist" makes her feel like wiggling.

Okay
Label: Absolutely KosherGenre: Folk, Pop
The first time I listened to Okay was somewhat of a brief and cynical experience. Too cute in its depression, I thought. Their upcoming album Huggable Dust is made up entirely of one-word-title songs that run an average of about two and a half minutes. It's quirky before you even press "play," and it gets quirkier once Marty Anderson starts in with his lonesome little-boy quaver over an acoustic guitar and other sounds and instruments reach for a melancholy kind of folk-pop. Yes, it's a bit of a lo-fi cabaret. But it's one you won't want to stop watching thanks to how personal those somber lyrics are made to sound through Anderson's home recording aesthetic. Fans of Daniel Johnston, The Flaming Lips, and the Elephant Six collective will find much to like. The rest of you might, too.

Seattle's Man Plus is kind of like 3hive--a bunch of dudes, one girl and all about the music. When I run low on musical suggestions, I tend to stream KEXP radio when I wake up in the morning and when I did just that recently, I came across this. I was very happy about this find. I have to give much love to the good people at KEXP for always throwing up something new, something smart and being profound musical locavores. To my ear, Man Plus is definitely music from the Pacific Northwest. I have no idea how one really defines "music from the Pacific Northwest" in 2008--but I'm feeling like it has to be part rock out music, part semi-impenetrable lyric (see: "I want to be the number 12") and, of course, part unrestrained angst (see: all those gloomy pretty guitars attended to by the tendency to move from pretty singing to expressive yell-singing). It has been the soundtrack to this gloomy but sweet morning, and to many others.

The good news: Matt Harnish and Karen Reid, the brains behind this outfit, are still going strong. Each dose of Meho Plaza's quirky, hooky electro-punk takes care of business, then bolts—leaving you craving more. I'd hardly call it minimalist, only that each musical element is used cunningly and sparingly. If there is an imbalance worth noting, it's that Mike Thrasher's lyrics take a back seat while the Moog gets its own dressing room—but it's all for the good. From what I've read, their live show's even better than the recorded version, and quite different. Alas, I'll never know firsthand until they get enough funding to tour beyond of their SoCal homebase...so buy this record (available on iTunes), if only for me and everyone else east of the Pacific Time Zone.

The Love of Kevin, Colour, Chaos, and the Sound of K
Label: KoraGenre: Electronic, Pop
Compare and contrast my post of May 18, 2005, with this one. Same band. Same song title. But just as the Swedish duo of Lindefelt and Fredrik have changed their performing name from The Lovekevins to The Love of Kevin, Colour, Chaos, and the Sound of K (or "The LK" for short), they have also changed their style. "Stop Being Perfect" has gone from being a textbook Swedish guitar-pop song to a textbook Swedish electronic pop song (there's the contrast). No change though in their ability to craft a catchy pop song, one that induces singing along and toe-tapping. For the curious, some of those older "guitar" songs from their 2005 Max Leon EP can be downloaded from the Songs I Wish I Had Written website below.
Original Post (as the Lovekevins) 5/18/2005:
There's nothing quite like blindly buying an album at the local record store and finding something you just love. Trust me, I've bought some real junk over the years (Betty Boo circa 1990, anyone?) in that pursuit. But I've found some really good stuff. Sometimes it's the album cover (Jessamine), sometimes it's the record label (Henry's Dress), sometimes it's just a good vibe (Super 5 Thor). Even today, in the new millenium, that still happens with the world wide web. I stumbled across a real gem of band, the Lovekevins, on the online store Delicious Goldfish Records. Fantastic Swedish pop that soars and bounces and captivates and I just have to go listen to "Stop Being Perfect" again right now.

Canadian bands, especially those not from BC, have extra special cred in this regard as their weather is even worse than ours. Hence Hilotrons, of Ottawa. This post has been a long time coming. Because I haven't loved any music lately, and because, well, I've been so very MIA. So first things first, hello again! Some things change (i.e. the seasons, my computer [!!!]), etc but thankfully never, ever my weakness for the british accent and quirkilicious bands. I'm really glad that these poppy, punky girls and boys decided to cite Architecture in Helsinki as an influence on their own accord, so I didn't have to do it first. Los Campesinos has the same big, bombastic, pleasantly messy collective sound and the same absolutely misleading kind of name--these seven british kids don't appear to be anywhere from anyplace that speaks any kind of Spanish (although I could be wrong). I feel like seeing them live (which I have not) would be a blast of colors and dancing and rocking out and just a whole lot of fun. I look forward to it.

Vanilla Swingers
Label: Rough TradeGenre: Electronic, Pop, Slowcore
It was my daughter's birthday yesterday and the major festivities happen today, so the in-laws are in town (they just walked in the door) and my hosting and fathering skills are required, but I don't want to short change the 'hive or this band. Lucky for me, Anne and Miles of Vanilla Swingers just dropped these tracks of gold into our suggestion box yesterday, saving me the trouble of digging through piles of mail, electronic and snail. While their name rings oxymoronic (I imagine swingers to be more of a Rocky Road or Chocolate Fudge Ripple variety) there's nothing contradictory about Vanilla Swingers' music. Moody, electronic tracks are the backdrop for hushed boy/girl vocals telling the story of two lovers who run away to London then travel back in time. "I'll Stay Next to You" epitomizes Vanilla Swingers' cinematic themes and sound, while "Danger" sounds as if the Pet Shop Boys slowed things down to about 90 bpm and were fronted by a gorgeous, brunette chanteuse. Oh yes, despite their name Vanilla Swingers sound very brunette, the color of my desire.

We Are Standard
Label: Minty FreshGenre: Pop, Rock
Before you download "On the Floor" from this group of Spain-bred English-speakers that have already invaded Europe and, if their wishes come true, will invade the United States next, you might want to hop into your Mini Cooper and drive back to 2002. We Are Standard's brand of art-school-post-punk-cool-geek music—they cover "Waiting for the Man" for crying out loud—reached its high water mark around that time, with all of the "The" bands (Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Moldy Peaches, Hives) selling records and getting airplay on terrestrial radio (remember terrestrial radio? You didn't even have to pay for it!). That's not to say that they don't sound good today. On the contrary, lead singer Deu Chacartequi almost makes me believe he really is both a sex symbol and a rock star. The thing that keeps such hubris from being too nostalgic and goofy is that you get the sense that he doesn’t quite believe it himself. But he does a little.

Under Electric Light
Label: NoneGenre: Electronic, Pop
Danny Provencher began making music as a child secretly singing over records (something I still do, not so secretly, as a full-grown man, often over records I only hear in my head). At some point he committed his music to record, leaving out, ironically, his vocals. The earliest recording as Under Electric Light features four synth-pop instrumentals that sound like a mix between early Depeche Mode beats awash in New Order melodies. From my not-so-scientific investigation, Provencher didn't come out of the proverbial vocal closet until about three years later. The result is a clean, dreamy, earnest style free from any bells and whistles, content on remaining inconspicuously, well, great—and entirely timeless within the window of the last four decades. "Wintertime" is nothing less than a small epic worthy of ushering out this current season, while leaving the listener wanting more: oh, play that chorus again, please! "This Moment" fills that gap by repeating its gorgeous, soaring chorus once. Oh well, I'll just have to listen to them for the fifteenth time. Pull my leg.

Thao
Label: Kill Rock StarsGenre: Folk, Pop
I imagine everybody else has already heard these new tracks from Thao (formerly known as Thao Nguyen and also seemingly masquerading as Thao with the Get Down Stay Down). If not, then you should know they absolutely and completely rock (in a folk-pop way). Pulled off of We Brave Bee Stings and All, her Kill Rock Stars label debut, Thao brings in the kitchen sink and everything else to slap together a huge party in these two teeny-tiny songs. From the HGTV-inspired lyrics of "Bag of Hammers" — "Shake the frame of this house / Distress the wood, make it shout" — to the lost love of "Beat" and its accompanying brass (is that a tuba?), Thao doesn't let you down. (Sadly, though, I think the links on her old 3hive page do.)

Hanne Hukkelberg
Label: NettwerkGenre: Experimental, Pop
I've been a patient boy. And today all my quiet suffering and yearning pays off. Hanne Hukkelberg's new album comes out today and she begins touring the states this week. What Hukkelberg offers this time around on Rykestrasse 68 is fortunately more of the same: beautifully textured percussion, swaying rhythms and her exquisitely delicate voice. Her bicycle returns on this recording along with 29 other different instruments. The best way to listen to Hanne Hukkelberg is to simply shut up. Shut up your preconceived ideas of what a pop song should sound like. Shut up the glut of voices and sounds you've been listening to all day today and let her swab your skull clean, like a slice of aural ginger clearing your head of everything before it, and hear the world for the first time again.

(Original Post 10/25/05):
My eight year old started up on the clarinet this year in school. Never having played a reed instrument, I took a stab at it. Wow. Blowing into that little hole to produce any sound besides that of cats mating was impossible. Lucky for us and our neighbors, it clicked with my son much quicker. Segue to a recent CD shopping spree and I bought this Hanne Hukkelberg album based on the cover art alone. Several tracks feature a gorgeous clarinet and I was anxious to play it at home. The rest of the album was simply a wonderful surprise. Ms Hukkelberg's calm, gentle vocals evoke a female David Sylvian, and her minimal, jazz-like compositions played on, among other things, pots, pans, wineglasses, and bicycle spokes, make for an organic version of Björk.

Orilla Opry
Label: Ships at NightGenre: Folk, Pop
Emma Baxter and Daniel Noble, recording as Orilla Opry for Montreal's Ships at Night Records, make an awesome noise. Folk-influenced, stripped-down pop, sometimes harmonized, sometimes dissonant, with hooks and crannies and texture and detail — if Orilla Opry was a house, it would have character and heavy duty curbside appeal. Try "Riverside 2," off their latest album Lighthouse for Stragglers' Eyes, for one of the prettiest, most ear-pleasing songs of the year (well, technically, from late last year).

These United States
Label: NoneGenre: Folk, Pop
These United States fall on the Devendra Banhart side of the folk scale in terms of their "freakiness." I imagine their songs would take you on quite the headphone trip; I've yet to put them to such a test. From what I've heard thus far from their forthcoming debut, A Picture of the Three of Us at the Gate to the Garden of Eden, my expectations are ratcheted up something fierce. It's as if I've just picked up a new novel, fallen in love with the first chapter, and I'm feeling like I'm on the cusp of reading The Great Americana Novel. As if...

Bricolage
Label: Memphis IndustriesGenre: Pop
Bricolage plays the smart, snappy, pop music I enjoyed listening to as a younger man—back in my high school days and early college years. This is the sort of song I'd listen to while getting ready for a date, gelling and blow-drying my hair (when there was enough to warrant such a styling) and dressing according to the glossy templates found in men's fashion magazines (not unlike the Bricolage boys themselves). The upbeat, breezy sounds signified the budding hope and possibilities every new girl, every new date, held. Currently living the myriad of possibilities one such date produced I still follow my youthful listening habits matching the music to my mood. And these days Bricolage-type moods grossly outweigh the stormy, dark, and depressing adolescent funks that often followed less successful outings with the young ladies of my youth.

Monade
Label: Too PureGenre: Pop
New out today, in the U.S., on Too Pure Records is the third album by Monade, featuring Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab on vocals and songwriting duties. I haven't heard the complete record so I can only speak of this track, "Regarde." From those few minutes however I can tell you that Monstre Cosmic is more fleshed out than their bedroom debut, and more cohesive as a pop song than many tracks from A Few Steps More. Fans of Stereolab won't need their arms twisted to give Monade a listen. I'm pretty sure they're all in the know already. For those of you who haven't heard Stereolab, an elite few I'm sure, you'll quickly realize what you've been missing out on for years: a serious groove and a seriously gorgeous voice. The difference between Stereolab and this latest from Monade? A certain down-to-earthiness as Sadier trades the spacy effervescence of the latter for grittier, found sounds from her neighborhood.

Science For Girls
Label: NoneGenre: Electronic, Pop
If I reveal producer Darren Solomon's musical pedigree you may very well choose not to listen to his newest endeavor, Science For Girls. I guess it depends on how comfortable you are with your closet favorites. I'll leave his former employers unnamed and leave the sleuthing up to you. Solomon lays a smooth, electronic foundation to each of his songs—gentle rhythms, rich keyboard riffs, scratchy hip-hop beats—then turns mic duties over to various, flying-below-the-radar New York-based singers (Bronwen Exter [wow!], Boots Ottestad [The Getaway People], and Paul Brill). They're icing on this trip-hop, brazilian pop, chill-out layered cake. The vocoder vocals on this track are the edgiest element on Science For Girls' easy-listening debut. I can easily hear Science For Girls being obliterated by the WB, Gray's Anatomy, Starbucks muzak machine. Get to SFG before they do.

This is one of those albums that sneaks up on you bit by bit, note by note, melody by melody. A subtle record that, after hearing it once or twice, lies dormant for a spell until you find yourself humming one of its tunes. "Empty Bottles" has been floating around in my head for weeks. The simple, rich harmonies are sweetly palpable, not unlike the sensation I experienced the first time I ever listened to Either/Or. Lemuria

Buffalo's Lemuria has been been a real working band since their formation in 2004. Touring, touring, and then more touring. So after putting out various singles and EP's, their debut album Get Better is out now on Asian Man Records. And their song below, "Pants," has triggered my obsessive compulsive disorder; besides having me absolutely hooked, it's so catchy, fuzzy, and snappy, that after Sheena sings "You never missed a word I tried to fit/Inside a chorus, inside a verse, all my intros and the bridge/That's where I put all the awful things I think I am/And if you still respect me I guess I'll have a second chance" I want to tell her that she leaves a great first impression.

Hearts of Palm UK
Label: NoneGenre: Electronic, Pop
The following is a Public Service Announcement from 3hive and Hearts of Palm UK.
Hearts of Palm UK offers a timely song this week about citizens and their right to vote, "Super Tuesday," the (un)official anthem of (obviously) Super Tuesday, the day 24 states in our blessed union hold presidential primaries. Hearts of Palm UK are not British or Northern Irish, as the name would suggest; Erika and Ambi-D are a couple of Cali girls cranking out this peculiar indie-electro-pop. As a political science major in college, I secretly hope that they follow this up with a song discussing, dissecting, and explaining the results of Super Tuesday. Maybe they can even get invited to appear on Meet the Press. Anybody got Tim Russert's email address?

School of Language
Label: Thrill JockeyGenre: Pop
After their sophomore album, Tones of Town, the band Field Music called it quits, in a sense, momentarily, but not really. They didn't break up, but instead kept working, individually, trying to be as productive and creative as they always wanted to be. I assume they have plans to make music as Field Music again. In the meantime, School of Language is the first product to surface from the hiatus. The first single, "Rockist Part 1" (there are four parts of the song on the album) finds David Brewis taking his School of Language moniker seriously as a barrage of looped and layered vowel sounds stream through the song, but thankfully not the album, in its entirety. By part 3 of "Rockist" the looped vocals take a backseat and sound like a more traditional instrument. Working by himself, the similarities between Brewis and Andy Partridge seem more prominent. If "Rockist" tickles your proverbial fancy, take a gander at the album stream. Brewis tours the States beginning in March, fleshing out his one man band with Doug McCombs (Tortoise) and Ryan Rapsys (Euphone).

Last year my friend Matt was passing through town and I dragged him out to see the Apples in Stereo with opening act Oranger. After Oranger finished their set, he turned to me and asked, "How do you compare Apples and Oranger?"
With The High Water Marks we get to do just that. Featuring Apples in Stereo drummer Hilarie Sidney on guitar and Oranger drummer Jim Lindsay, with members of Palermo and Von Hemmling filling out the team, The High Water Marks have a rocking, jangling, cymbal-crashing good time. Pinto
Label: Krusty StillsGenre: Pop
Getting scooped is never a big deal at 3hive. For most of us, this job is a pleasant distraction from our real responsibilities: changing dirty diapers (Shan, maybe Sam, me), grading papers (Sean, me), hanging out with famous people (Lisa, sometimes Sam), being married to famous people (Jon) being Californian (Sean, Clay), and making huge bank (Sam). The only real competition comes from snapping up new tunes to post, and I always feel I miss out on the Swedes. Therefore, the posting of Pinto's lo-fi pop is a kind of small victory for me. Whoo! This is from the band's website: "Pinto is more or less a one man band but I have some friends around to keep me sane because Pinto is all about being sane... Say what?" Well hello Edie Brickell! I won't even mention the title of her ubiquitous late eighties/early Nineties "New Bohemians" hits, hit lest one in particular gets stuck in your head for the rest of the week and haunt your dreams. (You know which one I am talking about.) Looping music in my mind notwithstanding, I was delighted to find this collaboration between Ms. Brickell and her hubby Paul Simon's son. She's always had a beautiful voice, thats for sure, and it seems that Mr. Simon (the younger, Harper) has added some of what appears to be his youthful dreaminess and angst to the mix. Shall we play the definition game? Eighties earnest meets Nineties earth pop meets the offspring of Simon & Garfunkel and then gets busy with the present day and hangs out a little with French lounge pop? Maybe/maybe not, but I heart.

Figurines
Label: Control GroupGenre: Pop, Rock
I've been digging through the mail and scouring the net for two hours searching for that something something that will hit the spot. Figurines do the trick. The band's last album Skeletons recently made it back into heavy rotation here at 3hive's Southern California HQ, the wood/cork paneled office in my '70s suburban tract home, so I figured I'd do some nop-notch investigative work on the band's current status. I struck gold: two new tracks from their forthcoming LP, When the Deer Wore Blue, plus the video for another. At first I was let down by the songs' slower tempo, but only for a listen or two. The slower the tempo the more they channel a lovely, laid-back Beach Boys vibe ("The Air We Breathe"). The band's U.S. label, The Control Group, already has the album up for sale, but it won't be out in their hometown until next month. I'm kicking myself for missing them in L.A. back in October. This calls for an exception to my no-mailing-lists-because-I-don't-need-the-extra-emails-rule. Sign me up boys!

You diehard 3Hivers (we love you!) will recall that Canon Blue was originally posted just three months ago. But Daniel James is giving away the new Halcyon EP for free, and it's so lovely (especially the title track) that I felt it deserved a little more plug time. Unzip and enjoy! Canon Blue is the creation of Daniel James, a Nashville-based do-everything musician who came to my attention not through any tangential southern connection but through his European label Rumracket. That could be because he’s not your typical Nashville kind of dude. Or is he? James may prefer digital to analog, keyboards to six-strings, drum machines to high-hats, but at heart he’s a singer-songwriter in a town that cultivates and nourishes them. Good thing because Canon Blue’s helium-filled harmonies, industrial beats and sweet falsetto deserve all the cultivation they can get.

Paper Moon, one of my favorite Canadian bands. The brainchild of musical experimentalist/drummer Hamish Thomson, The Hermit also features — with greater prominence on their most recent release, Turn Up (the Stereo) — the alluring voice of Allison Shevernoha from the aforementioned Paper Moon. Samples from the new spin can be heard over on MySpace; I like "Si vous me quittez" a lot. Amongst these desperately needed donations, Malajube turned up. And while it seems to me that there are many a sound that could be described as belonging to Montreal (lo-fi loveliness like the Unicorns; gorgeous string infused songs for depressives like Owen Palette; etc.)--the one I need right now in this moment of return to my 1999 boom box is this one: scratchy guitared, French-Canadian, happy, bouncy indie-pop. Between his myspace and Ghostly pages you can get a good feel for his debut full-length, The Many Moods of Ben Benjamin Vol. 1. Yay! It's always a good email day when something comes from The Harvey Girls. You're never sure what it might be – concept album, tribute, covers, et. al. – but you know that it will have a healthy dose of sweetly melancholic harmonies wrapped in a subtle sonic blanket that'll keep you warm and cozy. Well, it turns out that for the past year or so they've been collaborating with the lovely and equally adventurous UK outfit Feedle, latter-day ambient wizards who make lo-fi electronic music that in more devious marketing hands might be called "lifestyle music." If you're resolved to improve your self-defense this new year, may I suggest The Martial Arts. They may not improve your karate kicks or your break-bricks-with-head skills, but they'll do wonders for your cardiovascular health as you find yourself bopping around the room to their bouncy rhythms. Their timeless throwback pop sound is influenced, according to their myspace page, by "Partridge & Moulding" (XTC) and "Holsapple & Stamey" (the db's). It's rare for young bands these days to name such pairs as influences, rarer still to pull off a comparable tune, but Paul Kelly & Co. have succeeded in doing just that. Surprisingly, the band (Scottish themselves) is only beholden in Sweden to Groover Recordings. This is one band I'll definitely be keeping my eyes and, more importantly, my ears on in 2008.
P.S. The band was offering their album, Your Sinclair, as a free download through Christmas, but guess what? It's still live. So grab it while you still can!

hollAnd
Label: TeenbeatGenre: Electronic, Pop
Let me end 2007 with hollAnd, one of my favorite all-time bands, who I first wrote about on 3hive in May 2004, although it's not so much a band as it is one Trevor Kampmann, musician/producer/former-child-TV-actor extraordinaire. A dozen (or more, depending on how you count) releases, along with even more production credits, over the last dozen or so years. From the day I bought the Sea Saw (his first moniker) seven inch Stereo on a whim at No Life Records in LA until the recent release Love Fluxus and my new favorite hollAnd song "French Grass" (replacing his cover of Human League's "The Lebanon"), I'm man enough to say it's been a love affair.

4Hero
Label: MilanGenre: Beats, Electronic, Pop
Today’s selection is actually a nice bookend to Lisa’s Hello, Blue Roses post yesterday, albeit 4Hero has always been more of a sweeping club fave than an electronic bedroom dweller. Way back in 1999, I took a job in Los Angeles and drove down the very next day in my Chevy Sprint Turbo (yes, turbo), and 4Hero’s Two Pages, which came out a few months before, was about the only cassette I had that would play in my cheapo radio. Unlike the CD release, the promo segregated the darker drum’n’bass onto one cassette and the more chilled-out, string-laden fusion stuff onto another. As the title suggests, one was a great antidote to the other. In the central Utah mountains? Time for Ursula Rucker’s smooth spoken-word over lovely breakbeats and sweeping strings. Trudging the home stretch through the Mojave? Bring on the sci-fi jungle. Since that bygone era when we were all going to be dot-com millionaires, 4Hero has gravitated more and more toward the groove, and “Morning Child” has the feel of both a return to form and a culmination of the form. It also sounds like a lithe and lovely summer song, so perhaps it’ll warm up your new year a few degrees.

Hello, Blue Roses
Label: NoneGenre: Pop, Slowcore
Today I will be brief in favor of yet another satisfying nap. I love slow, electronic-ish, mixed-voice fare. I really, really love it, actually. And from this vantage point, Sydney Vermont and "her man" [direct quote from Myspace bio, interesting...] Dan Bejar (who spends some time with Destoyer and the New Pornos as well) are yet another antidote to seasonal indulgence. This one was recommended by my dear friend Seth, who will leave New York City this week for more verdant vistas. How appropriate and delicious the melancholia.

Chairs in the Arno
Label: MushpotGenre: Electronic, Pop
Have you ever pursued a particular boy or girl because he or she was hot in a way that another particular boy or girl was hot, but for whatever reason the former boy or girl avoided your clutch? Well that's the situation in which I currently find myself. Musically speaking. It's been over a year since I've heard anything from Jason Korzen in any form and I've been in need of an synth-geek fix. And as my dear Cuzzin Brad used to say, Chairs in the Arno are "putting me where I need to be." Moogs, a microKorg, an MC 505 groovebox and sweet boy/girl vocals are like Hershey Kisses to me. Once I've popped one in my mouth, I can't stop. Those wily Kisses are prone to push my pants slightly past size thirty. Chairs in the Arno remind me that hey, that's OK.

Benji Cossa
Label: Serious BusinessGenre: Pop
My friend Sam (as in Sam, one of the founders of this website) is a huge sucker for Christmas music. In high school, I remember caroling around his neighborhood with his family (all ten of them!) and it was just so... good. So this post is all about you, S'mee. Benji Cossa has released a whole X-mas album — Merry Christmas to Friends and Family — on Serious Business Records, with every song available for free and legal download. Alex Chilton's "Jesus Christ" is here, along with a bunch of the classics and a Benji original, "Friends and Famly." I hope you like 'em, Sam. Maybe one or two will show up on your annual Holiday CD Cleaner? Oh, by the way, can you send me your address? Your tin of cookies is probably getting stale in the back of my car.

While I respect Lisa's opinion on what makes a summer song, and I certainly like shaking my bottom (no matter its size), I've always liked the easy-going, feels-like-the-sun-is-shining-right-on-me genre. Maybe it goes back to the lack of sunlight we have up here in Michigan the rest of the year, I don't know. But "Sunset" by Benji Cossa is just what I'm talking about. Katy tossed this one in our suggestion box, and I'd give her a big, platonic hug for it if I could. Does this song feel good or what? Not to mention the subject matter... "Doin' it, doin' it, do do dodo do." Ain't that what summer is all about?

Air Miami
Label: TeenbeatGenre: Pop
Having previously confessed my love for Mark Robinson, founder of Teenbeat Records and driving force behind Unrest, Flin Flon, Air Miami, among others already listed elsewhere on these pages, I must share my excitement over the Teenbeat release of two previously unreleased Air Miami albums, Fourteen Songs and Sixteen Songs. Robinson started up Air Miami with fellow Unrest member Bridget Cross after that band's breakup, and "Airplane Rider" is the single that preceded their 1995 LP Me, Me, Me. I still use their wonderous song "World Cup Fever" and all of its remixes to help me get through non-World Cup summers.

The Bell
Label: BadmanGenre: Pop, Rock
Despite my penchant for cheerful pop I do enjoy moody sounds more than occasionally. The Bell joins fellow Swedes, The Mary Onettes, as another Scandinavian '80s flashback band with a darker edge. Who am I kidding? The Bell is about as dark as a fluffy white cloud getting between you and the sun. It may throw a shadow, but it won't ruin your picnic. The Bell is as threatening as anything on the Pretty in Pink soundtrack. The Bell does capture the mood, what you remember as melancholy when your mom made you tear down your Cure posters or when she drove you to the barber to "fix" your self-coifed Tears For Fears hair-do, you may have often experienced as a teenager during the Reagan Years. This is all speculation of course, because really, what would I know about that?? Watch for The Bell's U.S. release in February, twenty-two years after Andie, Duckie & Co. hit the big screen, on Badman Records.

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks
Label: MatadorGenre: 3hive Five, Pop, Rock
There used to be a bunch of MP3's available for Stephen Malkmus so that you could get a great sense of what the erstwhile Pavement frontman has been up to for most of the last decade — and if you haven't been keeping up, you're missing out. We're down to one: the sprawling, guitarilicious Randy Newman cover (!) "Baltimore," all 6 minutes and 37 seconds of it. The new album is called Real Emotional Trash and as far as I can tell there is no release date yet, so don't wear out this stocking stuffer too soon because it may be all you get for Christmas.

We'll go Detroit local for today's post, and check out New Grenada's punky rock riffs and rips, boops and bips, toy instruments and just about anything else they dig out of the closet. Like a lot of awesome indie rock outfits, John Nelson, Nicole Allie and Dave Melkonian seem to make a lot more sound than you'd expect from so few people. With three LPs and a handful of 7" and other recordings to their credit, New Grenada seem to be about to hit the sweet spot (even if their photo suggests they're survivng solely on the kindliness of others). Plastic Passion
Label: NoneGenre: Pop, Rock
On these very pages I have previously used the term "dance punk disco funk" to describe the Rapture. So please pardon me for applying the same label late on a Sunday night to London's Plastic Passion. Owing an obvious debt to the Cure for inspiration and the name of their band, Plastic Passion are a rough and raw complication of their post-punk/new wave influences in an age where similar bands are perhaps a bit too slick in their production. I can unfortunately only imagine what grand fun their live shows are, combining said roughness with the palpable energy of their songs.

Springfactory
Label: Series TwoGenre: Pop
I dragged myself out of my toasty-warm bed this morning only to be welcomed by a rare Southern California chill and this early holiday treat. Springfactory! And they've got what I never tire of: bright, sunny, Swedish-pop, delivered to the U.S.A. this winter, just in time to warm the fingertips and toes, via Series Two, a Nebraska-based CD-R label. Among the members of Springfactory are singer Lina Cullemark and Peter Gunnarson from Suburban Kids With Biblical Names. Lina also plays in a band called This Big Picture and boy it's about time she's got the mic. Her voice is playful and sweet and is especially endearing in the rousing "Get Out of Bed." Springfactory released their first EP in 2005 and Series Two just put out a limited run of handmade, 10 song CD-Rs featuring the band's two soldout EPs and two unreleased songs, including the glitchy and oh-so catchy "Peggy Pear," an eleventh hour entry to my year-end favorites.

The Swimmers
Label: MAD DragonGenre: Pop
The Swimmers released a pretty darn good MP3 EP back in August. It's a fun piano pop romp, and I probably should have posted about it back then. But I'm glad I waited because now I have even more praise to heap on these kids from the Illadelph. As some of you know, I"m a complete nut for Christmas music — especially fresh, new Christmas compositions that capture the magic of the season, rather than the uninspired covers that bombard me everywhere I go these days. And that's just what The Swimmers have created with "The Christmas Sound": a buoyant Christmas hit replete with sleigh bells, drum trills, and a sing-along chorus. As we all learn in the movie Elf, "The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear." Word to Buddy...
The Swimmers' next present to the world will be their debut album, due out in March.

Hey Hey My My
Label: Sober & GentleGenre: Folk, Pop
Every once in a while, something pops up in my inbox and completely catches my eye. In this case it was the music of two Parisian musicians who improbably have same first name and last initial, who have referenced Neil Young in their band name and who make music that is alternately sober and peppy. Even if I didn't harbor closet francophilia, a tendency toward melancholic-yet-oddly-upbeat music, and and a predilection for bands with "Hey" "My" "Clap" or "Ra" in their titles--they still would have had me at the opening of "Too Much Space". I hear they will soon be descending upon the states for a tour and that is good news indeed--these guys make me feel like I'm gonna be able to gloat about knowing about them first.

Magnus Larsson, as Pet Politics, is the Swedish Jeff Mangum. Fortunately for us, Magnus is presently recording music, unlike the reclusive founder of Elephant 6's Neutral Milk Hotel. I don't mean to say that Pet Politics is a copycat, but while Magnus's songs stand on their own, they also share the best traits of NMH, as in haunted, bizarre lyrics, pleasantly-driven pop, and that sturdy, powerful lead vocal with a unique cadence. Jack Peñate
Label: XLGenre: Pop
I run the risk of dating myself, my better half specifically, when I report that upon hearing "Second, Minute Or Hour" she promptly compared Peñate to The Housemartins. An apt comparison. It's the frantic, breathless delivery, the quick, jangly guitars, they heavy accent, and the playful lyrics, although Peñate lacks the acerbic subtext of many Housemartins' songs, a fact Peñate is more than comfortable with. In his bio he says, "I like stuff that's soulful, happy and intelligent—and I don't like music ironically." I should mention Ted Leo in an effort to bring a more recent artist to bear on the comparison. Another recent artist (and XL labelmate), RJD2 contributed to the song "Learning Lines." A fine pairing when you're working towards a soulful and intelligent sound. Jack Peñate's making quite a stir in the UK, with the press and the young ladies in particular, but when the masses here in the U. S. of A. consider American Idol to be soulful and intelligent, Jack Peñate may fly undeservedly low, avoiding the radar, when his album touches down here next month.

Band of Horses
Label: Sub PopGenre: Pop, Rock
We just got this e-mail from Jared and Stacey Schwartz, and they're doing this neat thing with a new website, AudioExposure. For every song that visitors add — preferably with a free & legal link — the Schwartz crew is donating a dollar ($1.00) to Critical Exposure, "a DC-based non-profit which teaches students to use the power of documentary
photography to advocate for school reform and social change." How cool is that?
In looking through the 70+ songs that have already been added, I noticed that Jen from Chicago had posted "The Funeral" by Band of Horses, which leads me to today's B of H update. When last posted, band of Horses was a recent addition to Sub Pop, with a few demo tracks available for download. Today, I can offer "Is There A Ghost," the opening track for their latest album, Cease to Begin, as well as "The Great Salt Lake," and the other links are live and well. The band is touring the US and Europe over the next few months, and that's about it. Check out AudioExposure and have a nice day!

These demo tracks from Horses — or is it Band of Horses? Even after digging around on their website, I'm not sure... — are pleasant and pleasantly genre-defying, hence the Pop/Rock catch-all designation. Try "Funeral" and "Bass Song" for an idea of the cross-section of their '70s and '80s influences. Led Zepplin? New Order? Maybe I just need more sleep... Anyway, hopefully the Horses found much audience love on their recent tour with Iron and Wine, and will complete their Sub Pop debut soon.

Mikrofisch
Label: KomakinoGenre: Electronic, Pop
Mikrofisch is our first entry from the Hamburg net-label, Komakino. Their album, Masters of the Universe, represents the label's first full-length release (the band's second) and you can download it, in its entirety, here. Mikrofisch formed with the intention of covering The Smiths, but left their first recording session with four original tracks and "a brilliantly intimate lo-fi version of Morrissey´s Everyday Is Like Sunday on fourtrack." Five years later Mikrofisch remains brilliantly lo-fi, and brilliantly playful, but from what I gather, this long distant recording duo (London/Hamburg) backgrounded their guitars around 2003 and opted for a synth-based sound. The first song, "Drum Machines Will Save Mankind" serves as a kind of mission statement for Mikrofisch in their understated quest to take over the musical universe: "Make a beat so we can dance, make the kids form bedroom bands." Then Mikrofisch sets their alliances, forming their own Justice League of Indie Rock, in the tongue-in-cheek "Let's Kiss and Listen to Bis" (hip, indie reference help). The band name drops some of their favorite bands and sounds circa 1995: Teenage Fanclub, Dinosaur Jr, Afghan Whigs, Sonic Youth, Twee, and an allusion to the now defunct March Records ("Keep Sparky's dream alive...). Finally, it's the micro-epic "The Kids are All Shite" in which Mikrofisch battle the current UK indie scene including HMV, NME, Coldplay, Keane, Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian, Jet, Razorlight, their clones and fans. Delusions of grandeur? Perhaps, but Mikrofisch's small and simple sounds are brimming with enough hooks and wit to bring their great dreams to life.

What do 80's electronic dance popsters Freezepop have in common with the Dead Kennedys and the Sex Pistols? They've all been included in the video game Guitar Hero!
Life has been good for Freezepop since we first posted about them on 3hive in July of 2004. They've been included in said Guitar Hero game that the kids love so much, and they'll soon be in some MTV game (I'm not so good with reading to the end of press releases), but they sure keep pumping out the 80's inspired electronic pop. So let that be a lesson to all you young bands and kids just playing Guitar Hero out there; keep doing your own thing, and maybe you, too, will someday be featured in Guitar Hero XXVII.

It's a rare day that this kind of pop is considered a threat to national security, but then, these are strange days we live in. Apparently, a "data hard drive containing critical album files was detained by US Customs. The drive was held "to be analyzed" for several weeks on its way back into the US prior to final mixing of the album." Well, as a mention of the band Death Cab for Cute simply hurls me backwards to my collegiate days of angst and Chuck Taylors--I'm glad the music pulled through. Chris Walla, DCFC guitarist/producer, despite some strange customs officer's sentiments, is not making "contentious" music, its true. Kate Tucker & The Sons of Sweden
Label: Red ValiseGenre: Pop
By the time I've published a post I've probably listened to the song(s) I'm reviewing around twenty times. But it only takes about twenty seconds to decide whether or not I like the song enough to post it. This was not the case with the present artist. As soon as Kate Tucker parted her lips to release her rich, dulcet voice I was gathering rope and beeswax to avoid following her to my inevitable destruction (forgive my allusion to the Odyssey; I'm deep into the Rouse translation...). You'd hear no complaints from me if this was the last voice I ever heard. Tucker herself journeyed from her home in Ohio across the country to Seattle and settled in with a couple Swedes and a young man obsessed with the Cocteau Twins. Tucker's folk-influenced picking patterns (I stole that one straight outta the bio) sumptuously melt with her band's ethereal programming and reverberating guitars. The result of their meeting should be ringing brightly in your ears now. If not, get your click on! With the WGA strike entering its second week, the music folks over at Grey's Anatomy will have extra time to discover this siren's songs.

The Teenagers
Label: MerokGenre: Pop
A downright spunky meditation on a young man's obsession with Scarlett Johansson, thinly veiled in the title as "Starlett Johansson." Start/stop guitar bursts interspersed with spoken word factoids about Ms. Johansson make up the verses (the line I'll find myself dropping as a non-sequiter [accent and delivery included] into future conversations: "I'm scared by spiders too"). The chorus explodes into a synth-pop romp, with Weezer-like hooks. This track is filled with the youthful, giddiness I expect even my old man experiences when he sees his starlett crush on-screen, or on the streets of Barcelona, arm-in-arm with Woody Allen, as he did on a recent overseas trip. Speaking of tripping overseas, this Parisian trio is scheduled to play the U.S. early next year.

Maybe it's because he's a father now, or maybe it's because he's got a place, a self-restored a 1964 mid-century modern Eichler home, to proudly call his own that Brad Laner has finally shed his many masks and is releasing his first proper solo record, Neighbor Singing. At least his son and home have both inspired and restrained him, allowing him small windows of recording time which helped him keep an objective view on the album. These two tracks hint at a sunny, summertime pop record, a loopy-Beach Boys kind of sound. A sound, Laner says, that has emerged not from his record collection, but from his own biological self: "I wanted to shamelessly utilize all of the different skills that I've built up over a lifetime of musical experiences." No shame necessary. Dig this.

The Evens
Label: DischordGenre: Pop
To quote my friend Rick, "The best band ever."
Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina made this wonderful lo-fi pop (in punk rock style, of course), and frankly, we at 3hive have never featured a Dischord band until now. It was time to right this wrong.

[ingenting]
Label: LabradorGenre: Pop
File under: Better Late Than Never. [ingenting] may mean "nothing" in their native tongue of Swedish, but this wonderful single, a favorite of mine since Labrador offered it for free, oh, about 11 months ago (see first sentence), is anything but. The post-punk guitar, the keyboard-driven simple melody, the disco bass, and the crisp drumming are awfully catchy and do not deserve to be horded by me any longer.

Tulsa
Label: Park The VanGenre: Pop, Rock
Things are always bigger in Texas, right? And Tulsa's in Oklahoma, which is next to Texas, and thus things should be a little bit bigger there too. Um, yeah. This Tulsa's actually from Boston, but they've got some big sound, and lots of it. The three songs below, from the recently released album I Was Submerged offer up a good idea of what the band's all about. Some shimmer here and some crunching guitar there, understatement in one track ("Shaker," which might be my favorite of the bunch) and a little 1990s Brit-rock swagger in another ("Mass") — good stuff to fill the wide open spaces.

The Cotton Jones Basket Ride
Label: Quite ScientificGenre: Folk, Other, Pop
It might take a few spins — there must be something spinning inside the computer, right? —for this debut track from The Cotton Jones Basket Ride to really work for you. Greg and I were hanging around, giving it a listen, and our first thought was to turn down the volume, for the sake of discretion. But there's something about former Page France frontman Michael Nau's voice that begs to be heard. In this case, it's the refreshingly bluesy, breezy falsetto of "Had Not A Body." He's singing about demons in his head and fire in his throat, but you know, the song is so cool and laid back, it's really nothing to worry about. Time will tell if the rest of his new debut, Paranoid Cocoon, will be equally tranquil; it's due in early 2008. Until then and according to the promo people, "an individually handmade, hand-stamped, limited EP Booklet of five songs is available for purchase at all Cotton Jones shows, and via the Quite Scientific website. The booklets are hand made, hand stamped, and include a CD of four songs set to appear on the upcoming record, and one exclusive to the release." Right on.

Elk City
Label: Friendly FireGenre: Pop
So there is this perfect meal that I like to make in the fall (due credit must be given to Marcella Hazan, the grande dame of Italian home cooking). I just take some plum tomatoes (canned are best, but the good kind, not the five for a dollar kind) and I put them in a pot. Then I take an onion, cut it in half and put it in the pot. Then I take five tablespoons of butter and, ahem, put it in the pot. I then cook the contents of the pot for 45 minutes, spoon it over piping hot pasta and sit in my pajamas watching wretched TV. It tastes just as good as any complicated and fussy meal I've ever made. But this is not a cooking blog, its about the music, so what the hell is my point? My point is that Elk City'simple and lovely "Los Cruzados" is the long missing final ingredient to this simple, yet high octane, tomato sauce. My point is that songs don't have to redefine the rules to be good, and sometimes taking a few simple, common, high quaity ingredients and mixing them into the pot can yield the most comforting, pleasure inducing things. And then of course you add some butter. If you were wondering, singer Renee LoBue's melty, raspy voice is totally the butter.
