Stream the new Portishead

Just in case you haven't heard, Portishead's long over due Third album will be available next Tuesday. You can stream <strike>the whole album</strike> thirty second clips of the new album now at last.fm. Just so you know I've danced with Beth backstage at the hors d'œuvre table. Yes, it was one of the highlights of my music geek life. That moment is diametrically opposed to the time Suzanne Vega sicked her manager on me—this after her label had asked me to interview the prima donna. Did I say that out loud? Good.

My wife's got me reading one of the Tuesday Next lit-fantasy-mystery-comic-thing-a-ma-bob by Jasper Fforde. In it characters travel through the earth's core via a "gravitube" that quickly drops passengers to the other side of the world. I'd love to have access to that contraption so I can see my favorite Swedish bands like every weekend. But in this case truth is better than fiction and the Mary Onettes are traveling "over-mantle" for their first ever tour of the U.S. Sweetness.

Make a Muxtape

The idea behind Muxtape is simple: upload 12 tracks and make a streaming mixtape for friends, family, pets, clergy, etc.. I'm sure it'll eventually come with vanity stats, Google ads, and a bunch of other bells and whistles but for now I'm liking the spartan interface. Here's my first go: samaman.muxtape.com

Anti-Blog

The Anti label is hard at work putting money and elbow grease behind bands about whom we've only spilled out a word or two: DeVotchKa and Islands. Plus they've recently released the new album by one of our all-time heroes: Bob Mould. PLUS, oh yes, there's more, last week they launched their own blog to keep close track of the comings and goings of their artists. Stop by and download their new label sampler, for free. It's not clear, and I'm a too lazy to confirm, if these are the tracks from that sampler; just dig in And thanks Anti for sharing! Love the Cadence Weapon!

More Music from 3hive Artists

It's been a busy year for the 3hive kids; new jobs, new kids, and new mortgages are keeping us from sharing the sharing as often as we'd like. We've been shirking our self-mandated responsibility of alerting you to the best free music floating around on the interweb, and it hurts. I'm crying on the inside. So here are a couple things I've been meaning to post—from two of our all time faves: Cassettes Won't Listen and Mobius Band. Many of you probably already have these, but these are too good too miss if you don't. Better late than never!

What can't I help myself?? AAAAGGGHH!!) and drop their debut album, Catherine Avenue from lofty heights on January 22nd. If you were otherwise occupied on July 14th of last year and missed out the French duo's first hometown show in 10 years, then you may be very interested to get a taste of what 18,000 sweaty, Daft Punk fans were bumping to.
Email your mailing address to suggestionbox [at] 3hive [dot] com by midnight Sunday (1/13/08) if you'd like to get your hands on the goods. We'll draw one random email as the winner.
For more Daft Punk than you can shake a glow stick at, hit these:
If yes, let me turn your attention to a gift that will keep on giving. THE GROOM'S INSTRUCTION MANUAL: How to Survive and Possibly Even Enjoy the Most Bewildering Ceremony Known to Man by 3hive's own Shandon Fowler.
Now, I have yet to read the book (I didn't even know Shan was working on it—the sly devil) so I can't give it a proper review, but his publisher, Quirk Books, calls The Groom's Instruction Manual "an irreverent guide to everything guys need to know about:

    * Getting Engaged (popping the question, finding a ring)
* Wedding Planning (choosing a location, drafting a guest list)
* The Big Day (rehearsal dinner, toasts, what to do if you start crying)
* Post-Wedding (honeymooning, thank-you notes, newlywedding)"
I cried at my wedding. It would've been nice to have Shan throw a few pointers my way, back when. Congrats on the book Shan!

Christmas Cereal Treat from Compost Records

All these sweet memories came crunching back when I heard "Cornflake Boy" from Marbert Rocel, one of Compost Records' newest signings. The song's available as a free download from Compost's myspace page. I have bigger plans for our breakfast tomorrow: sourdough pancakes from a decades old family starter. Mmmmmm, pancakes.

It looks as if the 'Pickups may have a Top 10 hit on their hands. In an effort to fan their fans' flames the band will release a remix EP, this Tuesday on iTunes, featuring remixes from Jimmy Tamborello (Postal Service) and labelmate The One AM Radio. Only two songs get a holiday make-over, unfortunately "Well Thought Out Twinkles" isn't one of them, but hey, this season is all about giving not getting, right? Well, get a load of what Silversun Pickups have to give:
Silversun Pickups Remixes [stream, 6 song EP]

Really these are cheap popularity contests designed to lead your eyeballs to a new site. But hey, we're cheap and easy like that, so we like playing along. And besides, this contest is run by the Nielsen company which has tracked America's viewing and listening habits for years and years. So it's actually reputable. And if that's not reason enough to cast your vote, if we win we'll receive a commemorative t-shirt! Wouldn't you like to see me, Sam, Jon, Clay, Joe, Shan and Lisa all stuffed into one cozy tee!?! One drawback: you have to register to vote. Hit the banner to do so. Thanks in advance for giving one more entity your personal info.
