Play It As It Lays #239

I hope this show is as fun to listen to as it was to put on. My guest DJ for the evening was Mike Vavak, who featured some of his music along with a bunch of LA/OC bands he's played with. I'd been waiting all week to pull off the Lloyd Cole & Commotions into Camera Obscura segue. I heard/saw C.O's new song "Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken," on youtube last week. Youtube killed the MTV star...finally.

Little Darla Has a Download for You

And frankly, Mr. Shankly, it's about time! These 15 downloads (available here), one download from each of their most recent 15 releases, is the first time in a long while that Darla has offered up complete and full MP3s. Which is a crying shame because I know for certain Clay, Sam, and I would all be hollering about this world-wide, world-class pop connoisseur.

Play It As It Lays #238

The playlist from last night's show. Highlight: Futura 2000 & The Clash. News to me--back in '83 graffiti artist Futura 2000 rhymed his way through his "tag-ography" over a dub groove by The Clash. The track is included on a new compilation Celluloid Years: 12"es and More. Wanna hear the show? Email me for the link.

A Few 3hive Graduates

Three of some of our favorite 3hive artists have or are slated to release their albums on new/bigger labels:

Jose Gonzalez Veneer out now on Mute Records. "Heartbeats:"

The Coral Sea Volcano and Heart out June 27th on A Hidden Agenda (FYI: the band pulled their MP3s down. An unfortunate side-effect of signing to a label).

Tapes 'n Tapes out soon on XL Recordings although you can still get the original self-released version.

Tons of Covers of Love Will Tear Us Apart

My Old Kentucky Blog has a great list of bands who have covered Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart. With links to music.

Calexico does a version as do Kaycee and Squarepusher.

Commenting on 3hive.com

We've grown tired of wading through the comment spam and have finally been pushed to force visitors who wish to comment into authenticating before being able to comment.

We realize that this might be an inconvenience and we apologize for that, but the amount of spam we receive makes it so we spend less time finding music to share and more time managing the spam.

If you wish to comment on 3hive, you'll need to click the link marked "sign in" to begin. It's free, relatively painless and will work on all kinds of sites besides 3hive.

New EP + MP3 from Thee More Shallows

Thee More Shallows are back (relatively quick considering the last three year draught between their last two albums) with a new EP, Monkey Vs. Shark. The EP's seven tracks include a remix of "Freshman" by Odd Nosdam with Why?, which is just a super-sweet use of Bay Area resources in my opinion, as well as a stripped down version of Al Green's "I Can't Get Next To You:"

I Can't Get Next To You [MP3, 4.4MB, 128kbps]

Looks like they're having a one-off release show for the EP on May 25th at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco, for those of you who are geographically fortunate enough to attend.

Play it As It Lays #236

KUCI's fund-drive is live! If you've ever listened to the show, I'd encourage you to make a pledge to this fine non-commercial station. All pledge info can be found here. For a basic pledge of $30 you can choose from one of these premiums, and as special bonus for my 3hive peeps...if you make that basic pledge, I'll also throw in THREE more CDs, handpicked from the 3hive library. Just make your pledge, email me to let me know you did so, and list three of your favorite new bands/albums. Once I confirm the pledge I'll send you three CDs I think you'll enjoy based on your list of favorites. On to the show...
