New Beat Radio MP3 Now, EP On the Way

Several of us here at the Hive spent the latter part of 2005 with Beat Radio as an integral part of our personal podcasts, so it's always a good day when a new MP3 from the band arrives in our inboxes. "Elegy" is another gem of "wistful melodies" and "subtle, vulnerable lyrics" that is sonically expanded by warm washes of reverb. It goes without saying that we love 'em, and others are getting the message, too: Beat Radio opened for The Grand National Wednesday night in NYC. More shows are sure to come, as is the Ecstatic EP.

Mates of State New Album and MP3

Everyone's favorite organ'n'drums duo Mates of State has got a new album coming out in March, and they're currently touring the country in anticipation (not coming to my hometown, but that's a matter I'll be taking up with them). The track below is from Bring It Back and highlights everything that is good about the Mates o' State:

R.I.P. J Dilla

J Dilla aka Jay Dee aka James Yancy passed away yesterday, in his sleep, from liver complications. He was 32. The man was a genius producer working with the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Pharcyde, D'Angelo, Slum Village, Madlib and others. Condolences to his family and friends.

His new album, Donuts was release on Tuesday. Download "Airworks" here: and check out his myspace page, for more cuts from the album.

Leave Ya Nines at Home and Bring Ya Powerbook to the Battle

You know it's a slow news day when Yahoo's featured headlines include "Performers Turn Laptops Into Instruments". Music? On a laptop? You don't say... Oh well, heaven knows turntablists have had their fair share of the spotlight over the past 20 years or so. And it's good to see 3hive fave Zapan get some big media love for laptopbattle.org. As for me, I'm the mack so I don't need to tote a Mac... (Apologies to Jeru for that and the headline...I couldn't resist.)

New MP3 and Album from The Loved Ones

Finally! A full album from some of my favorite new rock and rollers, The Loved Ones. It's called Keep Your Heart and it's out February 21st. I've been living on the demo and EP for too long--and the band didn't just crank out a few new songs and slap 'em all together. Thirteen tracks in all--ten brand new ones, and the three they've served up as MP3s. Love 'em.

Crash Gallery Taking Over Austin

Our TX sources tell us the band Crash Gallery is all the rage out their way. Only way to hear them right now is on their myspace page. If you've been dancing your nights away to Bloc Party, you'll want to keep an ear out for these gents and get them into the mix. They wave the neu-wave flag, with emphasis on the guitars and less on the irony.
